YIKES, how many times I tell yall DO NOT overcharge a battery cuz that will totally ruin it even worse then insufficient charging grrrrrrr

Anywho I was at the Elnora Tractor show like 5 days a drivin my Yamaharley Gas Golf Cart (haulin old widder women around) with a ton of stops n starts, never any long time or high RPM running (for good charges) sooooooooooo (but still starting n running perfect) I figure when I get home I will give her a bit of slow charge to top her off before my next outing. Sooooooo I put my charger on earlier at about 20 amps figurin to take her off in 30 mins or so and I didnt put it on time charge or auto or shut down etc

YOU GUESSED IT I had a law client come and I got busy n plum forgot it was charging for like 3 hours and I was on the porch maybe 500 feet from my shop n all a sudden I smelled that familiar rotten egg n hydrogen smell YIKES I beat er on down there and it was bubblin n gurglin n outgassin something awful so I go in the shop farrrrrrrrr away from the battery n turn off the power. Long after it was still gurgling n gassin but I eventually got it washed off n cooled down n checked the electrolyte buttttttttttt now its deader then a mackeral

Oh well, it was 4 yrs old anyhow so Im headed to Wally World for a battery, maybe get some grass seed n stop by the local watering hole mmmmmmmmmm its nuttin $75 wont fix

A gettin forgetful in my old age John T

DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO LOL

You should have an old battery charger like my old Montgomery Ward's charger. The charging amps on it drop off to zero when the battery is fully charged. My wife gave it to for Xmas about
35 years ago. You can charge either 6 or 12 volt battery's. Hal

John, You need a cheap timer to turn your charger off. I take electrical tape and cover up the electric eye on my Christmas light dusk to dawn timer. You can set it for up to eight hours and it turns itself off.

Or you can go to wal-mart or HF and buy a smart charger that turns itself off when the battery is fully charged. I use both methods. George

Cheaper than a battery.

My charger already has a time feature but silly me set it on keep chargin (NOT timed) grrrrrrrrrr cuz I planned to take it off in 15 to 30 minutes

I have done that before, now I gots a bunch of them harbor freight float chargers layin around, when I need a machine in a coupla days, I'll hook one of them up, if the battery doesn't come up, then it needed a new one , anyway!

John, At least you had four good years out of the batt. Just think it could have been a new one. It's not a total loss some places pay 4-6 bucks for old batteries. Stan

Well Iguess thats why I never seen you when I was up there saturday. You were out ridin around in the cart.lol. Good lookin ol deere you got there.

John..anyone who can point fun at themselves has a true sense of humour. Always enjoy your witty and informative posts. I think you should now take that old battery and check the specific gravity...no you won't need a hydrometer...just slide it over to the edge of a work bench and keep pushing. If it falls it's probably no good.

John, you gotta count your blessings. Your sniffer still works good and you're still fast enough to beat the BOOM. The memory might fade a bit at times but two out of three ain't bad. lol

I took it last night for my core when purchasing a new one, I had the the young pencil necked pimpled clerk test it just for the heck of it n he told me it was bad and maybe needed to be charged YEAH RIGHT it done had plentyyyyyyyy of that lol

Got a new big Exide now wooooooo hooooooo When I take it to the Florida Flywheelers I seriously may drive it 10 miles a day all short stop n starts in that sand is a load on the battery, but I had the starter/generator rebuilt a while back so she holds up okay but I just like things heavy duty and well maintained same as I keep the RV I HATE TO BREAKDOWN IN PUBLIC GRRRRRRR

PS After I install the new battery today Ima gonna top it off a bit since its been sititng on a store shelf butttttttt Im NOT gonna forget it plus Im gonna set the timer for 15 mins at 20 amps UNLESS I FORGET !!!!!!!!!!!

I was a bit surprised I smelled it like 500 feet away, she was really cookin hard, so I went inside the shop to the breaker panel to turn off the power, I wouldnt dare pull the clamp off top the battery with all that gas BOOMMMMMMM

People laugh at my old Sears charger that I bought in the 70's. But..... it has an "Automatic" setting that drops off to 0 like yours. I've forgotten and left it on for days to come in and see the needle on "0". I suppose I shouldn't trust its circuitry and I DO try and remember it's on, but you know how that goes.

Been there, done that. The ONLY time I still use the big charger is to start something with a DEAD battery.

Otherwise I just hook one of my little Deltran brand Battery Tenders to the battery and forget about it. They will not ever overcharge a battery.

The lights on it are red when you start charging, then will eventually start blinking green as charge is nearly done, then stay a solid green at fully charged.

I usually keep one battery hooked to the little Tender all the time, so if I do have a dead battery in something all I need to do is grab the fully charged battery and put the dead one on the Tender.

The little one is a 750mA. You can buy them on eBay for $25 or less all the time. They are worth every penny. DOUG
