Ready to wean calves I keep them to butcher weight seeing corn is so high so filling the steer stuffer is geting expensive.what are all of yous doing to cut costs?Going out their and just giving the a small amount is ok but in the winter I jump in a truck and am gone a week at a time.

I backed off full feed a couple years ago and started giving alot more 2nd cut alfalfa and taking a couple more months to finish. I grow my own alfalfa but buy corn so if I can use more of my own product then I figure I can do that cheaper.

Was at a hay sale monday and nice alfalfa was going for over 300.00/ton. Horses sold dirt cheap (who can afford to feed em).

We will be feeding 3rd cutting alfalfa and feed free choice from weaning to 900#, from there half will go to full corn and pellets, half will finish on only 3rd cutting alfalfa free choice. Did that with a couple this summer and every one loved it, ordered more, and brought us more cusomers. I have alfalfa, and I grow my corn with low input cost's.

Curious if you did any side by side taste comparisons? I want to go to full forage if I could still produce really good beef, just a little shy to pull the trigger all the way.

1/3 shelled corn, 1/3 corn glutten, 1/3 soybean hulls. Add one bale of ground alfalfa orchard grass hay per 1000 pounds.
