Hi All,

As is usually the case, I got sidetracked most of the day yesterday makin' fence and didn't get to my engine repairs until way late in the day.

6 pushrods and 4 headbolts won't clear the fuel tank on these old IH tractors, so this is how I do it rather than pull that tank.

Now have 'er ready to slide that head gasket in anyhoo.

Used to change VW headgaskets without unbolting all the manifolds and hoses by just raising the head as far as possible (3 inches?) and cleaning by feel/sliding the new gasket in. Not the storybook way of doing it but saved a bunch of time on a car that would be throw away before it needed the next gasket.
 
That reminds me, still gotta put my 666 back together. I was lucky enough to get to pull the whole engine out, so I'll assemble it all and slide her in under the tank.

keeps everthing fresh in your mind when you have to finish it right away before dark.... Not enough time to get sidetracked and forget stuff.........
 
Like the other poster, I use cloths pins. I also have some narrow strips of masonite to lay on the block/gasket. That way you don't damage them putting the head on. Then you can just slide the thin strips out by lifting the head just a little.
 
I changed the camshaft in my M38a1 jeep without pulling the engine. I used zip ties to hold the lifters in place while the cam was out. It's a good alternative to clothes pins, etc. and easy to remove. Just an idea.
 
Heck,

I put the gasket on last and just slide it in between the head and the block blind.

Works for me anyway. :>)
