I always gotta be the bad guy................

took the two stallions for a walk to see a nice guy that patted them and gave them a little shot. Then castrated them when they went to sleep.... That's a crunching sound I'll never forget and will prolly buy shelled walnuts the rest of my life

Yesterday was the big day to wean foals. Never easy in perfect conditions, worse when someone "helps", so when wife got home from work to help, I had the job done (sure glad I taught everyone to lead with the quad or beside a vehicle). Went real smooth. Now feel like an a$$ when I go by moms or babies and they start screaming for each other because I took them away and they think I'm bringin them back.
Babies are taking it better than the moms tho....

Done now.

clamped/crushed the cord and left the clamp in place 10 minutes each time. Pretty impressed with the vet tho. Did it outside on the pasture but prepped the horses and himself like he was doing brain surgery.... BUT THAT SOUND.............

Saw a couple done that way and asked him. He said his way healed better and almost zero infection problems afterwards. Didn't even stitch them afterwards so that the wounds could drain. 10 days and you can hardly tell there was a surgery.

(quoted from post at 05:27:07 09/27/11) We run cattle, etc, but I hate weaning, too.

Feel extra bad cause I tricked them into it........... Pastures aren't real big and riding so many horses isn't feasable, so to exercise the babies it's a mile or so jog/run with mom being led on the quad. Just another jog but took them in another paddock a mile from the pasture and took mom right back out and away. Left the first mare there on the first trip to babysit and took her away after all babies were in place. Was her first baby and she adored him, so she's takin it worse than the others..... Just came from them and things are getting better tho.....

(quoted from post at 05:28:34 09/27/11) You call THAT surgery???

what else would you call it???????????? I was thinking what I've seen on cattle, dogs, cats, etc. This was a knockem out, lay em on their back, shindig......

I knew a guy who would do neither of these things without checking the "sign" I assume of the Zodiac. My wife's Aunt check the "sign" when my wife had some surgery. Wean animals when the sign is furthest from the heart. For surgery, do it when the sign is furthest from the area where surgery would be.

You sure do learn from those "experiences"

About 10 years ago my wife (now deceased) was "sniffing the bottom edge of Her new sofa. I asked why and She said she smelled dog pee! The next day She took both of our dogs to the vet and got 'em cut!! My Daughter came into town a few days later and She grabbed Her dog too...You will NEVER catch me or my son wizzen on Her sofa!
