OnStar won't track cancelled subscribers

Gee Thanks........................"

Well, I couldn't remember if JDSeller got his pickup exorcised.

Tinfoil hats only partially prevent tumescence. I can testify.

In all fairness to the tinfoil hat crowd, just because OnStar has stopped tracking vehicle that don't have a subscription doesn't mean they can't do it if they're ordered to do so by law enforcement. They might refuse to do so without a court order, but that is a minor inconvenience to a law enforcement agency.

That said, it doesn't matter what brand of car you drive, law enforcement can always attach a GPS tracking device to it; many courts have ruled that they don't even need a warrant.

There seems to be a lot of debate on OnStar about how they track you. I can kind of understand that when word came out that they sell that information. What I don"t understand is why someone can"t put a toggle switch on the power supply to the unit and turn it off when they don"t want the world watching?. There is someone tracking you whenever you have a cell phone on. Nobody says anything about that.

Because its in all the operating systems of the vehicle, doubt they could really shut it off if they wanted to because its intertwined with the whole electrical system.Another good reason not to buy from Gov't Motors.

Put the toggle switch on the antenna. Very, VERY simple operation.

Without an uplink to the satellite(s), they're dead in the water. :>)

I heard a story on the news last week about onstar tracking everyone even if you canceled it.
I think they were even selling the info to marketing groups ?

Last night I heard Chuck Schumer is calling for an investigation. So now onstar has suspended what they were going to do.

I sure would not trust them !!!

I also can't believe all those who jumped all over the guy here wanting to disable his. Sure seems he was right they were up to no good with it.

Best option don't buy any GM's at all. Now GM is in cahoots with China so they can get subsidys to sell the Volt in China.

I read about the FBI wanting them to turn on the microphone to follow some folks..... Don't knowhow much is real & how much is tinfoil stuff.

Wife & I had a lot of Pontiacs in our past. We bought a Toyota in 2008, didn't want OnStar & saw no reason to pay for something we didn't want. Right after that GM axed Pontiac and turned into Govenrment Motors. No, I don't think we did it single-handedly. :)

Please show to me the "toggle switch" that will work properly (or at all) at the frequencies used by OnStar.

Not that simple at all.

Bingo.

Ford too has aa similar system and all manufacturers that currently do not soon will.

Big Brother is here and the genie cannot be put back into the bottle.

i was actually able to turn off the tracking on my cell phone.only way to track me is if i call someone and they triangulate with the towers.

We have OnStar on both my GMC Truck and my wifes new Terrain. We both like it in the fact that we don't need to use cell phones or GPS units. We both are guilty of playing with them while driving and the hands free OnStar offers I have to say is nice. We also like the fact if you are in an accident they automatically call the authorities for you if the airbag goes off.

However..... I do not like getting a phone call from OnStar, the dealer, and an e-mail when my car ticks 5,500 miles that I need to make an appointment for my 7,500 mile service. Asked to disable it on the wife's car, OnStar said can't be done. We monitor all systems within the car even if you don't subscribe to the service and will send the dealer notifications. I think I am going to go Allan's route and install a toggle switch in the wiring to disable it when not in use. And as much as I hate Toyota, Honda, etc... our brand new GMC has had a recall for engine issues and been back to the dealer twice in 5,500 miles. It's like politicians, none are any better than other.

I'll only get worried when I can even afford to buy a new enough vehicle to be equipped with OnStar..........

LOL really about the only time the government can track you because of sheer numbers is when they have reason to. Lets say they tract your vehicle with on star to the vicinity of a crime scene. They still have to prove it was you in the vehicle and then you that commited the crime. The tracking devices they can put on you car can be tracked locally which means that they can tail you without getting caught at it. Then through eyes on they can place you and your vehicle at a crime scene.

Just cause they alway catch the bad guy on CIS in less than an hour every week don't make it so. Go look at the FBI's most wanted list.....some of these people have been fugitives for years and even with all this tracking stuff they can't find em much less catch em!

I'm more concerned that onstar is selling info on peoples movements. If I had an onstar vehicle I'd do things like park in a red light district once a week for hours, then at the chruch. I'd park at wally world and catch a ride to target...anything to mess with thier data.

I don"t have a vehicle newer than 12 years old so I"m not up on the new tech. It just seem like there must be a power supply wire at the unit you could sever and put a switch on. I seem to remember reading a post here a while back about a man that couldn"t talk the dealer into disconnecting the OnStar unit and going across the street to buy a dodge. I think I would rather park the chev a mile from where I didn"t want someone to know where I was going and walk rather than drive another Dodge. You walk anyway.

You guys better get rid of your cell phones and computers cause they can track you easier on them then onstar. Anything that goes over the airwaes is possible to track.

Your right. I won't have to worry about Onstar because I will never buy another GM product.
I was a slow learner because it took nine trucks and cars before I learned that there were better choices.

General Motors, a few years ago, released this program called OnStar. The service has proven popular. An alteration to the privacy policy of OnStar prompted the Federal Trade Commission to start examining the program, which has led to a minor improvement in the policies at question. And now, even with limits, OnStar will still be tracking and selling data. This is the alarming part of the service. Under the new terms, OnStar reserves the right to share that information with other companies and organizations, even data culled from motorists who no longer subscribe to the service but who have left the two-way communications connection open.

Glad I have a Dodge. It is ridiculous that these companys think they can skirt around the constitution. You can have your icrap and GM's,trackin ppl and selling the info.My Grandpa(God Rest His Soul)who fought for this country is turning in his grave for sure!
