what runs the PTO??

not a trick question, just trying to absorb something in my head and weed out possible BS.

Tractor I'm probably getting looked rough when it was picked up and has 9+k hours on it.

Motor is completely redone and, for all practical purposes, new....
Was worried a little about the trans and the hours but Hendrik and MJ in UK tells me the agriomatic is bullet proof. For S&G, contacted the seller and was told the tractor was used the last 10 or so years to pull a poop wagon twice a month a hundred yards or so to dump but mainly to run a PTO driven generator. Hours of constant running at higher rpm's and prolly poor maintanence took it's toll on the motor. But with the motor all new/reconditioned, those hours shouldn't have effected anything else???
Did get to drive it and it shifts thru the gears smooth and quiet, brakes work good and steering is tight.
He wants to do a couple more small things for inspection before he talks a deal, but I believe I'll get it.

with a live pto the shaft goes through your clutch into the fly wheel, at the back of the tractor there will be a pto clutch, I have never worked on one yet but will be soon. My mini, the pto does not engage so I have to fix it soon and will learn all about it.

Live pto avoids the aggravation and dangers of a
transmission driven pto.
Usually what happens is a tractor dedicated to
stationary and unattended pto operation. Is over
heating or low oil pressure. Rarely are Murphy
switches installed until the unit is ruined.
Due to airflow the same tractor may operate
within temp specs all day in the field. Yet run
the same tractor on a stationary pto application.
It may pull the same hot air from the rad and
around the engine/exhaust. Right back around and
into the rad again.
An engine rebuild is only as good as the shop,
men and materials involved. The engine may vary
from better than "new" to less than "new".
Usually a dedicated pto application tractor or
even a daily used feedlot tractor. Are in good
mechanical shape for the hours operated.

That's good for straight drive tractors but some have hydralic (sp). 4 digit Olivers have a hydralic motor under the seat driven by that shaft.

Congrats on the new 423!
As you can see in the attached link, the PTO is very much similar to a transmission driven PTO (except that the agriomatic clutch makes it live in low gear).
There is one set of gears, a couple of bearings, and a seal which are prone to wear on PTO-only work, as can be seen in the pic.
If the transmission is not noisy and shifts fine in all gears and PTO shifts fine too, I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks folks. Still gotta talk a deal with the kid Hendrik, but think it'll be in the barn soon  There are a couple pics in another thread if you want to see it. Have you got any idea what fritzmeier or Dieteg cab I need to look for?
