? for Allen in NE

I seem to remember a few years back that you put an electronic ignition on one of your tractors. Can you update us on how you like it, if your still using it. I have been thinking about doing the same and just wondered if you thought it was worth it or not.

Not only no, but a resounding He!! NO!

They are not made for heavy use and I'll guarantee you, it will fail unless you are just using it for a parade tractor or something.

After mine left me in the far reaches of my furthest field for the 3rd time, I went back to the points and haven't missed that set up one little bit.

It's not "if" it's gonna fail, it is WHEN. :>)

Me thinks I gotta go to town and buy some new ones. I've turned this place upsidedown.

I dunno, maybe I threw 'em away myself after my last questionable attempts. :>)

I'm, not Allan but I put EI on a 560 about 4years ago. Plugs last longer and it runs and starts better.

I have to add too. I have an Oliver 1600 that Grandpa bought new in 64, and from day 1 it always had issues with the points system. I switched it over to a pertronics EI several years ago, have almost 400 hours on them and haven't had one lick of trouble. Before I had to take off the distributer cap every 5-10 hours and diddle with it. I kept the same coil that I had on it before, as it was a new one from AGCO from when I had rebuilt the engine, and I only added the EI kit in place of the points and condensor.

While it doesn't go plowing in the fields, it does run the blower for hay corn and straw, and it does all of our planting in the spring. Also fills in here & there on other jobs if the 285 is busy or down.

Our Massey 165 hasn't had the same issues with the distributer, so we're leaving it alone.

These need to have resistor plug wires or they will fail. We installed on our 3020 around 20 years ago. It failed shortly thereafter. Pertronix warrantied the module and told us to replace wires with resistor wires. We did and have not had any problem since. Use it for heavy work as well as light. Changed plugs twice in 20 years. Big change from before.

(quoted from post at 14:53:56 09/30/11) Wish they were available for 6v systems.

I think they are, check out the pertronix website.

I put a Pertronix electronic ign. on my 202 (Continental Z134) along with a new coil, plug wires and plugs and what a difference!
It starts almost instantly in any weather, it runs smoother, haven't fouled a plug in over a year since installing it and it will idle down below 200 RPM (I can take a video of it if there are non believers) and all you can hear is a little valve noise, not much from the exhaust. You almost can't tell it's running. I have run it all year in temps from -20°F (or so) all the way to 90°F. So far I see nothing but benefits from the system.

I've had one on my JD A for 3-4 years--no problems. Idles better, fouls plugs less, starts great. I replaced a good Wico X mag with the pertronix when I converted to 12V negative ground, so can't really compare it to points/delco distributor. This tractor gets used mainly to run a wood splitter and plow snow, not much field work.
