tires vrs gear ratio

Hi all here is a good question, as we all know all vehicles especially 4 x4 should have the same tire size diameter . Well the question is this , how do tractors , backhoes , etc. with smaller front tires manage to turn properly . Is there a compensated gear ratio between the front diff. and rear end , or is it that the front smaller tires just turn faster ?

You answered your own question. The circumference ratios of tires on front wheel assist tractors must match front/back. It does not matter on 2WD vehicles or tractors.

Pretty sure that on a MFWD, the front tires are geared to run slightly faster than the rears. If you change rear tire size, you need to stick with a compatible size on the front.

The front does turn a bit faster to keep the handling from being too squirrely. Changing tire size will change the handling some.

MFWD tractors have a ratio change in the transfer box to make up for the tire size difference. That said... the front tires DO lead by 1-5%. If they do not lead, the tractor will not steer properly. If they lead too much you get into gear problems...
