I am building a 'hotrod' tractor.F12 with a 2.8Lford V6.It has 14.9(combine)tires on homemade rims and a wide front from a Super C.I just got a Hiesler overdrive(2.15-1)It has a 5sp tranny, wich I disassembled, plan is to use the input shaft to plug into the clutch.I hope to weld a coupler to that to hookup to the tractor. My question is,can I put a regular distributer in place of the electronoic ignition system?the electronics have been previously removed. The engine is carburated(also needs a carb)Thanks,Steve

Will post more pics later....

Personally, I think you are wasting your time and money. A 2.8 engine will not develop enough torque to do much with that much weight and traction. "To each his own." And if you prove me wrong I will be glad to admit it. Good luck!

I learned it is not safe at all to weld on rims that have tires on them, even if they are flat and have the valve stems removed. Hope you had them off or got lucky. There is a vid on youtube of a truck tire on a rim and they weld a short time and then the heat builds and starts fumes on fire and explodes wildly. Once it starts, it happens in a hurry and there is no stopping it.

Good luck with your project!

I like your way of thinking!! I like home build equiment, especially re-powering stuff, can't answer you question on the dist., someone makes one.

He didnt say it is to be used for pulling a load. It will be neat when done just like the HARLEY DAVIDSON engine in the Farmall H.

Not sure about Fords but have heard folks say they do the distributor thing with Chevys. I have an F-14 with a Chevy 6. They kept the bell housing, clutch, and the 4 speed together then hooked to the Farmall tranny, giving them 'granny' gears. Good luck! joe

If you can find a points distributer for that engine then yes. Only difference from points to IE on that are the insides and maybe the upper housing outside the engine, shaft and gear will be the same......but you may want to play with the timing curve seeing as it's on a tractor.

Distributor for 2.8 Ford V6? Check the hot rod forums for Ford Taunus and Ranger parts. If I remember right the narrow angle 2.8 came from the German Taunus line and the 4.1 ranger engine was a long stroke- 4 inch or so- variation that would fit in place of a 2.3 4cylinder. Some hotrod equipment was made for both, early Taunus had distributors and the offroad players used them for couple years after the EPA mandate electronics. If you"re going to keep tranny case, don"t gut it and as noted you can have granny gears and with 5th gear overdrive a "road" gear. 2.8 engine can be hot rodded if you don"t have to meet emissions tests- there are a couple other sizes for that block beside the 4.1 RN

Many years ago I had a 1984 Ranger with the 2.8L V6 & 4 speed. I rebuilt it, replaced the stock intake with an Offenhauser intake, a small Holley 4 barrel and a Mallory dual point distributor. It ran pretty good, was kind of a fun project. Got rid of it when I moved to CA. Don't know if parts like that are still available or not.
