Smokin' Super A

I have a Super A Farmall which starts easily and runs steady but it blows some oil. Is it reasonable to think that a simple ring job could cure the problem? If so, can anyone give me an approximate idea on what a ring job might cost for the parts, and labor of a competent mechanic? And, finally, does anyone know a mechanic in the Kansas City area who works on old Farmalls?

Thanks

I don't think ANYONE can tell you what it needs 'til the sleeves are checked for wear, as well as the piston diameter and ring groove wear.

Chuck, this site has OH kits and lots of other parts. An A is a pretty simple engine. You can do the job in your garage.you can use mostly simple hand tools.Buy a book, ask some questions-no problems.Good Luck,We are here for you. Steve

A "good quality competant mechanic" will not do just a 'ring job'due to the potential for "come back".

In addition to the condition of lower end bearings and valve train components. figuring ~500 for a engine Kit with sleeves, pistons, rings and gaskets, Plus a valve job at 350, plus labor will be pushing 2000. Very rarely will just rings be a good choice. Jim

Rebuild it or don't mess with it. As the others have said you have to open it up to know what it needs and with any thing that is 50 plus years old you never know how good or bad it is.

Have you changed oil and filter make sure it isnt over filled. Clean the air filter and make sure the oil cup isnt over filled then some new plugs and that just could fix some of the problem. Have someone check the tappets also. I bought a B that ran bad missed and blew smoke. Set the tappets oil change and new plugs now it runs just fine with very little smoke if any. Its worth a try.You can get new pistons, rings, sleeves and wrist pins for around 53 a hole.

Friend bought a Farmall A that would blow smoke rings when idling.oil was seeping from the spark plug holes. The oil was filthy so I did an oil change .Compression check was good.I added a pint of MMO.I used the tractor to rake some hay.It had plenty of power and the smoking cut back.Friend used it to work his garden.I noticed the smoking was way down and it hadnt used much oil and the spark plug fouling stopped.Next spring the oil was changed. The severe smoking had stopped. This may not work on your tractor but it will cost 2 bucks to try it.MMO has a lot of solvent in it,about 28 percent.

Mine doesn"t seem to smoke all that much except when decelerating. When pulling a load, even itself uphill, it doesn"t smoke near as much. So, maybe I"ll just try the MMO and see how that works for the time being.

And, uh, WHAT IS MMO, and where can you get it??

Thanks everyone for your responses!!

MMO is Marvel Mistry (sp) oil But you can read what the can says then buy a qt of ATF and save your self half the cost of the MMO. ATF will do the same thing and cost you a lot less.

lasphemy!! Don't anyone let their kids read it!

Smoking on decelleration means worn valve guides.Vacuum is very high then.In any case old tractors smoke a bit and still get the work done.

At 50 to 90 bucks an hour he will make the job last as long as possible.People used to complain when cars used a quart of oil in a thousand miles, thought they should over haul the engine. 10 quarts of oil cost 6 bucks a year back then.

MMO has been in use for a long time.I know it will attack some O rings.Rislone is mostly kerosene. It was used in cold weather to thin oil a bit for easier cranking.

If you think about what a solvent is then yes can be good or bad. Te worlds best universal solvent is simple H2O as in water so yep bad for an engine but then there are a lot of other solvents that are good and if used as they should be work well. Detergent oils have a solvent in them so are the bad heck no. If used the right way a solvent can be good if used the wrong way they can be bad
