running gear into log carrier

Hey guys,

I just picked up an old running gear from a neighbor that I am hoping to turn into a log carrier. Have any of you guys done this?

It is missing the brackets for teh stringers.

Thanks,
Jake

Putting 3 foot tall posts on the axles (autosteer, or front fifthwheel plate if fifthwheel style.
That are at least 3x3' thick walled tubing will hold the logs in place. Wet logs are very heavy, 2 30" logs 12'long are going to be all a farm wagon running gear can handle, and will sink into soft earth easily unless it has wide flotation tires on it. Load light and give it a try, heavy loads are easier to dream that it will do it, but breaking it is not useful. Jim

I have one that I use that I just put the logs right on the bunks, it works fine but at some point I will make a wider frame on it so that I can carry more. I find it quite handy, but if I am going further away for my logs I have an 8x16 flatbed on two mobile home axles that I pull behind the tractor that holds more logs.

A flashback to the 40s.......My Dad used to take the front half of a set of "bobs" and use it to skid logs.
This was with horses.
It had a bolster with spikes sticking up and removable stakes. He rolled the logs on it and chained them down. This made pulling the logs easier on the horses on level ground yet provided some "drag" when going down a grade.
Boy, that was a long, long time ago! LOL
