dropping from 12v to 6v ???

i need a generator for my wd45 the 6v is trashed and the generator shop says they can get a new 12v delco for 45.00 but its 12 volt, i have a brand new 6v battery and would like to keep it... SO is there something i can put in line to drop the voltage from 12v to 6v or an amount of power the battery can handle without burning it up? only other option is to try to sell the new 6v battery But i know id get beat to death on the price even know its new... thanks
 
If you want to stay 6 VOLT any auto electric shop can get you/install a 6-Volt regulator in the (formerly) 12 Volt Delco alternator. (Either + or - ground, but - ground requires the diodes to be changed, as well.
 
A 12 volt GENERATOR (Not talkin Alternator here since you stated generator) may work if you simply use a 6 volt voltage regulator.....A genny/starter/alternator repair shop can swap out field windings to convert a generator from 6 to 12 or 12 to 6 volts. Ive made 6 volt gennys charge a 12 volt battery simply by changing the VR to a 12 volt but I dont recall going from 12 to 6 but seems that should be even easier on the gennys field windings as they will handle less current NO WARRANTY ON THAT HOWEVER

i decide that they wanted too much money to fix the old 6v generator so i bought a 12v 1 wire delco and il put in a new 12v battery, and sell the new 6v battery

6 volt alternators ARE available!
Many antique car owners use them
Some are even available in a generator case, to
make the car look authentic!
FIND...a "Hemmings Motor News" magazine,Lotsa Ads
Try: google.."6 Volt alternator"
A starter,generator,alternator, shop SHOULD be
aware of this!
 
I had to fix a 55 chevy that blew up 2 12 volt batteries when some one put a 6 volt generator on the car.Hooked in an ammeter and found 60 amps at 1000 rpm.A 12 generator brought things back to normal.The car blew up a brand new battery.
