battery charger??

Hey folks,
I've got a little automatic charger that will either trickle or normal charge a 12 volt battery. Works real well with 2 hitches...1) If the battery is clear empty, it won't recognize it's hooked up and won't kick on. 2) it's slow even on the quicker setting.

Want to get a normal charger but all I find here is a big 12/24 volt one or the small automatic ones. Except for one that is 6/12v and 10 amp.

Should that take care of my private (not a big garage) needs of charging fence charger batteries (have a few 6 volt ones also). And will it charge an empty battery?

Thanks, Dave

I'm sorry... I have a short term memory problem or I just missed it. Mind telling me again?

Dave, Check the last post you made about smart chargers, you made it a week of so age. If you can't find it, I'll tell you again how to make a smart charger into a manual one.

Another idea, take your dead battery and connect it to a good battery with jumper cables. Make sure the batteries have the same volatge. Jump a 6v with a 6v and a 12v with a 12v. Allow them to set for 10-20 minutes. Then connect both of them to a smart charger. This should work.

You should never allow a battery to go flat. Harbor freight sells a battery load tester for around $20. I don't leave home without one in my truck. Load test your batteries on a regular schedule and recharge as needed. In the winter you will freeze a flat battery, at which point it becomes a junk battery.

If you can't find a 6v charger, connect 2 six volt batteries in series. Then charge both with a 12v charger. Make sure both batteries have an equal charge. Either use a load tester of a hydrometer to determine their charge.

Let me know how things work out.

And it was an excellent and clear explaination! I think some people post a question and never check back???
I converted two of my chargers and printed your detailed instructions for future reference..
I meant to thank you --so here it is!

got it... Thanks! Completely forgot I made that post...............
Forgetful as I am, maybe the manual charger would get me in trouble... I'll stick with the jumper cable trick I guess. Also found a charger I ordered for the 6volt batts...still new in the package several years old... Thanks !
Earl Gray and Jiles...
forgot what I was gonna tell you

I think Harbor Freight is going to have their "Float" charger on sale for 3 days after Thanksgiving for around $5.00. Keep an eye on their sales stuff.

I bet it would work on 2 6V if you connect them in series. Low amperage for a long time.
