I was wondering how many shanks of a chisel disc/ ripper disc a 160 hp ih 1586 with 20.8 duals. Just a few acres of real heavy ground.

For a chisel plow, I always heard a rule of thumb was 10 hp per shank.

I proved this by pulling a 13 shank unit with a 1086, and an 11 shank chisel with an 856.

Not sure about a disc ripper.

There are different definitions for a disk ripper and there are different definitions for 'heavy' soil. Is it one that has big heavy shanks that can go 12" deep or more or is it just a chisel plow that's designed for no more than 8" deep. Around here a true disk ripper that's no wider than the tractor duals needs a 200 horse front assist to be effective. Your 1586 would need to be weighted down pretty good to get traction but you won't be going very fast-if you're pulling a true disk ripper in heavy soil. Jim

If you are talking about a consertil with straight blades in the front and twisted moldboards on shanks you should pull a 9 shank with no problems.
