What kind of crankcase oil, guys?

What kind of oil should I put in my IH 674 Diesel? Need to change oil now - today it"s 50 degrees, and I need to move some round bales and spread fertilizer. But the temps will all too soon be dipping down, down down to 10 degrees or worse. I do plug in the block heater, of course. Just wondering if there"s an oil with a range that can safely cover these temps and work loads?

Shell ROTELLA T Multigrade SAE 15W-40 I use it all year around

Shell Rotella 15w40 is what I use too. I use it in all my diesel tractors and gas trucks. We don't normally get down to zero much but it does happen

Whenever this question comes up it is overwhelmingly Shell 15-40 which they also characterize as "all fleet"

Berk1,,Hate to be the Decenting voice here!, I will not pour Shell Rotella even into a worn out lawn mower engine. Chevron Delo 400 15w40 I all I use.
My IH 966,
01 F350 7.3 DSL,100K since I bought it
Put near 200K on a 350 Chevy
Put 300+K on a 97 ford 4.6 V8, 4x4 My sons truck now!
I have put over 600K on various truck engines, Proof is in the milage!
Delo will serve your IH674 just fine!

Shell Rotella 15 - 40 jn 6 crankcases here.

I got 520,000 miles out of a 6.2 diesel in an 87 3/4 ton Suburban. That's pretty unusual and impressive. It always had Shell Rotella T, 15W-40. That certainly doesn't prove this oil is the best, but certainly proves it's pretty good.

I have several Ford pickups with diesel engines (6.9 and 7.3 turbo IDI) and well over 200K miles. My Dodge with the 5.9 also now just hit 200K. My 83 Chevy Blazer with the 6.2 diesel has 275K miles and had been a winter plow truck for many years. My wife's 91 Volkwagen diesel just turned 300K miles. My 1981 Chevy Chevette diesel has 250K miles.

Note that all have been using Shell Rotella T, 15W-40. I'll add that this oil was reformulated in 2009 and the ZDDP additives were lowered, but just slightly.

I've also heard good reports with Delo. Just don't happen to use it since I rarely see it locally at good prices.

When it comes to diesels, I've only seen one HD oil that was known to be bad. That was Quaker State HDX. Used to be very popular until a bad batch destroyed many engines in the early 80s.

For cold weather, I'd use 10-30 diesel rated oil.

because they would be full of a grey sticky
sludge!
Recently, I saw gallon jugs of Shell Rotella,
15-40, on sale at "Farm-Fleet", and almost tried
some, until, reading the label, I saw,"packaged
by Pennzoil"

Well I guess mine is probably real Shell because I get it without the packaging.

I think you'er full of it! I bought some at Fleet Farm yesterday. I just took a real good look at the jugs. I can't find packaged by Pennzoil anywhere!!
