Did we fill our tag today?

Had two dominant bucks chasing one fork horn and a spike. This was awsome as the 10 pointer and looked like a twin chased these babies down to the creek but the big boys stayed back. Watched the babies rub their little antlers together, thinking this is cool knocking their little racks together. Keeping an eye on the big boys and looking for a shot, the only one with the .243 in the scrub MISSED! Went to check where he was and bullet bounced off a VINE!. Trajectory from stand to where big boy was shouldn't have missed. Just tellin this got my heart pumpin. Hope you had better luck.

The last year Dad and I hunted, I started out with a .243 Pop gun I bought from my brother. I took a shot at a 12 point buck in some brush and never even nicked him. I didn't feel too bad about it as Dad did get him and he was the last buck Dad ever got. I on the other hand took the pop gun home and returned to using my .300 Savage after that.

Watched him all day chasin does and could not get a shot till 5:30 this evening , 13 points , forked brow tines , 50 yds. , 357 Marlin . I will try to figger out how to post a picture next week .

Long story, but the only one I saw worth shooting was on the ground as dads neighbor shot him. Got to watch the whole thing since i accidentally walked into his area that we both had permission on. He waved me on to stay there since he knew that buck was in there. Turns out he ran his way as was fitting, and I don't know how I would have felt about shooting a buck he was after but I didn't have to find out. Other than that I only saw spike bucks and mostly young doe. However while practicing my stalking I came to within 30 yards or so of two young does before we saw each other and 10 feet from a coyote. None of them knew what to think and were not even too scared since I froze when they were looking my way. Oh well I get to try again tomorrow

Not until Tuesday. Season opens Nov. 15th!

Did go out and sit in the blind for half an hour this evening. Saw three does, and a buck, (I think), was getting mighty dark when they finally came out in the field. One doe would have been a fairly safe shot.

Your problem is why I use a rifle that is a 30 cal and also one that some say is only good for the military as in a Russian SKS 7.62X39 as in 30 cal and I carry a real gun as a back up as in a 44 mag pistil. But here in Missouri you have to take one that is either a button buck or one that has at least 4 points on one side. As windy as it was here today I only saw one deer and it was a 8 pointer but by the time I knew that he was out of sight

Didn't see anything ,I even went back out and tromped every sticker patch and every big ceader tree i could see, I at the least would have liked to jump one up , but NOTHING

Wind has nothing to do with it when the rut is on . Out of 6 of us we all seen more than a doz. each avg. and the wind was blowing real bad all day , the sqacks were even packin nuts away in it all day .

Still bow huntin here in NY till next Sat.Was out Fri. and was some hot does around.Young bucks runnin all around me.Got a south wind all weekend though which does effect my best stand.Going out in a few minutes here.Had a smasher in the yard last thur.Dont ever see those boys but one time though around here for some reason.I guess thats how they got that big in the first place.

Nothing wrong with a 243,Ive killed a truck load with a 22-250.And Ive lost a few with my 30-06.Shot placment is important

Well it is the 7mm mag tonightt Just wanted to try the boys .243 since he was going to yhe MU Texas game. Never again.

I was hunting with my brother years ago when I heard him shoot. Back then He shot a 30.06. went help him find the deer when I got to him he was dragging it out and it had 2 holes in it. We went back to where he shot the deer and found a sapling that the bullet hit a couple of feet from where the deer was standing. The sapling caused the bullet to split and both pieces hit the deer.
Nothing wrong with a .243 just not a brush gun.

Had this one yesterday morning (first morning of gun season) within my sights just after daylight. He was about 100 yards too far for me to shoot since I was trying to hunt the brushy area with my 30-30 and he was in the middle of a field. The wind has been nasty since then and causing the does to stay bedded down or standing still for long periods of time. Our bucks move best when there is no wind and a heavy frost. Neither is in our forecast for the next week. I never have luck on warm, windy, or rainy days. Cold and still is the best.

My Dad shot a deer years ago with his 30-06...we found that the bullet had passed thru a 6" maple tree before it hit the deer.....lots of power with the 30-06...

Did I say any thing about the RUT???????? NO I did not so where did that come from. As for wind deer do not move as much if it is windy and it can also cause problems with shoot placement. I have been an hunter safety instructor for decades and been hunting the same area for 30 plus years so I know that area and I know how deer react to things in this area. Most years I have no problem taking 5 plus deer and have taken one already with a bow and that was the first day I was out

we run a guided hunting service and we've had a couple go over 150 so far. and rifle doesn't start until the 19th here. had a monster (160 plus 14 pointer) that somehow got into one of our hog traps (caught 60 something hogs so far this year) and that was no fun getting him out-never broke a tine off, but it's not very often you get to wrestle with a big deer. we are phasing out our box traps for open traps so we don't have to fish deer out, they just jump over.

You can talk shot placement all you want but when the ranges are out there the smaller bullets just loose too much energy. I know a guy who shot at a deer with a 243 at about 450 yards. We know he hit it but not hard enough to even leave a blood trail. He was shooting Federal 80 grains. At the muzzle they have about 1925 Ft LBS of energy and they zip along at 3350 FPS, at 400 yards it's down to 675 Ft LBS and 2147 FPS. The problem is the weight of the round is dropping 2/3rds of it's energy and a lot of zip. By comparison a 30.06 shooting Federal 150 grain at the muzzle makes 2910 FPS and 2820 Ft LBS of energy and at 400 yards is about 2110 FPS and 1485 Ft LBS. At closer ranges there is nothing wrong with a 243 and with most of the guys I know they will not shoot over 200 yards anyway so it's not an issue. Heck I know a guy who is convinced that a 30.06 is only good out to 150 yards! On the other hand my BIL wasted about half a deer with his 300 Win Mag just the other day.

I shoot a 25-06, while a smaller round it retains most of it's energy-is flat shooting and I have taken deer at 300 yards in Kansas with no issues. the 243 just doesn't have the oomph. and the 25-06 does not blow shoulders off like the 30wby mag, but kills them just as dead. but shot placement is the key to any round.

LOL what I was refering to is that you can have perfect shot placement but if the bullet is out of energy that perfect placement means nothing. No energy equals no penetration! That perfect "heart shot" isn't much good if the bullet only goes in an inch or gets stopped by a rib. 25.06 at 400 yards with Federal 117 grain ammo still has 1150 Lbs of energy, thats almost twice what the 243 delivers. I shoot 270, at 400 yards, with Federal 140 grain I'm still getting 1500 LBS of energy but if I drop down to 115 grain to get better velocity I drop to 683 LBS of energy. Thats where your 25.06 has the advantage is the extra velocity that makes all the difference in the world.

I reload so I just picked Federal to compare with.

Rick

if i only could choose one rifle it would be a .270 but for whitetail--25-06 is the cats meow. Have seen deer lost with 243 that shouldn't have been. but I have one that I use for coyotes mainly because the rounds are cheaper.

The guy I referred to with the 243 got it cause he hates the recoil of a larger round. He has learned that his rifle has limits and now shoots within the parameters of the 243.

knowledge is power, sounds like he learned the lesson.

Wish it was that easy. I did get a 9 point buck from out of the machine shed. I built a loft area in it and that works well as a stand. Could have shot a 6 pointer the other day but they is not legal to shoot. So far I have only gotten that one but did miss 2 that where in the thick brush
