Dear Readers
I have a case DC tractor that is out of time.
The D mark on the flywheel is in time but the timing gears at the front are not, how do I get them back in time? Thanks for now Matt,.

take it apart and do it right then.why is it out of time ? you got it apart? nothing hard, follow the manual. need to slide the cam out and line the marks to the crank gear.

Just a wag -what happens if your turn it over another 360 degrees? one full revolution? Remember your cam turns at 1/2 the speed of the crank so if a crank mark is ligned up the cam distributor is "on time" or 180 degrees from firing. You may not be out of time but instead at the top of the exhaust stroke.

Are the timing marks on the front off 180*? If so you may need to turn the crankshaft over 1 full turn to get them to line up.

I have no clue why it is out of time it just started losing power and after adjusting the valves by the flywheel D make it would not run.
Not I have the front timing cover and with the pistons a TDC the marks on the cam and crank shaft do not go to align
So do I have to remove the camshaft?

What I am thinking is when i got this tractor is had a engine kit put in it and it was timed wrong it has always been power less now that the engine is worn in it will not run

my book says to line up the single punch mark on the crank gear with the double punch mark on the cam gear.remove the magneto and line up the single punch mark on the cam rear with the double mark on the magneto gear.

for checking valve timing without removing timing gear cover, with tappets adjusted to normal operating gap, number one exhaust valve should be just closed when the flywheel mark E is vivible at the inspection port in the right side of clutch housing

there is no mention of D mark on flywheel

There is a D on the flywheel it is 1/16 away from the E the D is for #1 piston top dead center
how do you remove the cam gear and crank gear to retime it? i see the punch mark but thay do not line up

well ya to time it. but maybe you have other issues like a sheared cam key. if you see its out of time it has to come apart, dont know what the other guy did either. make sure your on the compression stroke when checking it though. watch #4 cyl. valves and they will rock the same as the crank when turned back and forth as aligned to the timing mark. that is to verify #1 cyl. is on compression the running mate is on the rock.

have you turned the engine over one full revolution to make sure your on the compression stroke. looking at the crank gear from the front, when in time the the punch mark on the crank gear should be at 10:30

do you have the front cover off the engine?

yes i have the front cover off On the cam shaft gear the two punch marks for the crank shart are at 7 and the one punch on the same gear for the governor is at 130

if you move the two punch marks on the camshaft to five oclock.where is the one punch mark on the crankshaft gear?

well then, as someone said, a key must have sheared on one of the two gears or the engine rebuider didnt do it right.the book says both gears can be removed with a suitable pulled, and be reinstalled without heating the gears.when reinstalling the cam gear must be backed up with a heavy bar.

if the cam gear is tightened with a nut, after removal of the nut you should be able to tell if a key has sheared.

on the 239,it does not have to be timed, before removal

no it has a locating key in the front of the shaft.the gear that turns the pump is captured and cannot be removed without removing the timing gear cover.so the pump can only be installed one way, mark the side of the pump where it bolts to the engine so you know where it goes when reinstalling.

There would have to be a key on the crank sheared or the engine builder would have to have put it together wrong. If the alignment key on the cam had sheared the timing marks should still line up. The cam could be off but the gear would still line up wouldn't it? Just thinking out loud.

Steven

the injection pump.the mounting holes are slotted right? you want it put back in the exact same location as before it was removed

Dear twopop
Thank you so very much for your help was so use full
Good to know that there is still good people out in the word like you
Thanks again matt
