I have just bought a 1944 Farmall M, it is a kerosene model and has the cast war time gear shift knob. When i first looked at it i thought it was missing the lights a light bar but when i got it home yesterday i noticed the box on the steering support that houses the amp guage doesnt even have a provision for a light switch, it does have 6 volt starter and generator but does this mean it never had lights? Does anyone have any information about this? would it be an option or something to do with war shortages? any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

The entire electrical system, including the lights, was always optional. There WAS a "lights only" option, and then there was the "electric start" option, or you could order up the full system with generator, battery, starter, and lights.

most tractors built during wartime didnt have lites, some came on steel wheels, and were hand crank to start the engine, then mag fired to avoid having a battery, all was done to provide materials for the war effort, later on most of these items were added to those tractors for convenience, it may have never had lites, if the owner didnt need to run at nite
