Why would they have an electric motor like this?

Hey all,

Just bought a sweep for cheap at an auction. It come with this motor on it. I surely don't need a horse and a half motor on an 8 foot sweep, so I'm gonna mount a half horse motor and sell this one.

Why would they put the shaft out the fan side of the motor and block the usual shaft hole?

Shorter shaft saves a bit of steel- it adds up. BTW, a half-horse might be a bit light. My 11.5 foot is at least a 1hp 110 volt.

Looks like a sealed motor to me, used in hazard environments.
Regular motor are open and the fan is internal and blows across the
stator and armature windings. This thing cools the case as you
don't want an open spark.

They are much more expensive than open windings and the bigger
and better ones are 3 phase for efficiency and torque.

Thanks for the replies, all. I've never seen a motor like this and a couple people I asked haven't either.

Garret, I think you're right. Notice the extra plug? Maybe to run a series of motors on a stirator. That lines up with Texasmarks' comment as you generally don't want spark in a bin... The auger is definitely not a stirator auger though. Guy musta just had the motor sitting around and he burned up the sweep motor.

B&D - I'm not looking to make 10 bucks (should bring more'n that, anyway). I'm looking to cut the weight of a sweep that I need to bring in and out of a bin every time I clean it out. I wouldn't do it if I didn't already have a half horse motor sitting here.

JMS - I have a half horse motor on a 13 foot sweep and it never acts like it's overloaded, so a half horse motor should easily turn an 8 foot sweep. Neither of my sweeps have the back plate and they're only about a 4 inch auger. Doesn't take much to turn them.

TEFC motor.......totally enclosed fan cooled. Under the shroud is a fan which blows air over the motor. Used in dirty environments.

A TEFC is not necessarily suitable for explosive environments. The TEFC blows air over the outside of the motor for cooling. Suitable for very dusty environments.
