proper method of Hyd. Pump change out

I have a ford 340 with a hydrolic pump mounted on the front. I am replacing the pump with a new one. I also have a loader, no backhoe.

Easy access but, should I put oil or prime the pump before starting up?

Absolutely make sure the pump is lubricated before start up. I might also crack the output line a little bit to allow any air in the system to escape. Once you get oil leaking out the cracked fitting, you an tighten it while the pump is running. If the oil is foamy, it has air in it.
