OT: battery seeping

I have a tractor battery that's leaking battery acid from the positive terminal. Anyone used anything to seal this? I may try some plumbers putty. Hal

Nothing will stop it but some heavy grease may help keeping the connection from getting corroded. They sell some little disks you can slip over the post to keep the acid from wicking up. I don't know how much good they do.

you'll prolly be better off just drilling a small hole in the cap for an easier pressure release... If maintenance free, make a hole anyway and put a rag there for absorbing....

Thanks for the helpful replies. I may try lowering the acid level on that battery cell. Hal

What Nebraska Cowman said (felt discs) are your best hope. One of the first things I was told to do when installing a new battery was to hold the clamp with a pair of pliers so it wouldn't get moved while tightening the clamp with a wrench. It will ALWAYS break the seak between the lead post and the plastic top; lowering the acid won't help-it's a wicking process that happens.

I have had some sucess with silicon gasket sealer. Clean it with water & get it good & dry. Warming with a heat bulb helps too. Put a good bead on it. If the post is loose, the vibration will break the seal again.

I found that battery sitting out on a street for pickup today. They would've picked it up
on Wednesday by the trash truck or any large items like a water heater. The positive post is tilted and the battery top has a small crack.
Looks like the battery had something dropped on the post. It's Walmart's best battery with the 3 year free replacement and has 12/11 date code on it.

I lowered the acid level in that cell and put some dum dum on the crack. I hooked my charger to it and the battery is fully charged. If it had been me I would've taken it back to Walmart. If I have trouble with it I may take it back and see what they say. I don't see any acid oozing out right now. I'll try the silicone if it leaks. I'll try and get a picture of the battery. Hal

That battery is waiting to explode. The blast involves flying acid and chunks of the case.
Does nothing good for your eyes, ears, skin, clothes or the machine the battery is connected to.

You seriously going to use a flooded lead acid battery. With a battery post that has been obviously impacted down into the case?
