leyland tractors anyone?

Hello i was wondering if anyone had any experience with Leyland tractors? There is a Leyland 252 for sale in my area, NE Ohio. I believe it is a 1972, owner says 1600 hrs. diesel, with remotes. he says everything works, and seems in good shape. Would this be a good replacement for my ford 600, for general yard/utilty work? Any info on tractor reputation or parts availability would be good. I would really be better off with a compact 4WD, but they are out of my price range. This would give me diesel, live pto, PS, (i assume)remotes etc over the gas ford for asking price of 3000 dollars. Im guessing it might be equal to ford 3000 or 4000 for less money . True?

The repair parts are just about impossible to get. They where just and average tractor at the best when new. The electrical system is a night mare. I had one we had to have the starter custom made for it. The armature was not available any more and there where no common one that would exchange. That cost over $1000 dollars.

So the three thousand dollars is not a real deal on it. If you are looking at off brand older tractors that are cheaper then a better choice would be David Brown. You can still get the parts through CIH for them and they are cheaper than the American equivalent.

You would be better off just saving a little longer and picking up a good Ford 3000/3610 tractor. You can get them in the $4000-6000 range. A MF 135 diesel is a good option too.

If you've got a sum of money you'd be happy to leave at the casino... then you're ready to go buy a British Leyland. You could just as well end up with the same result if you have a breakdown. Parts are not going to be easy to obtain... so you basically need to view it as a throw away tractor regardless of how good or bad it might have been.
There is a reason that Ford's, Massey's, Deere's and IH's bring more money. You can get most parts.

Here in SW Ontario, Leylands and their Nuffield forefathers are common. The BMC engine in them is very reliable and starts pretty much every time. The 10 speed transmission moves quick down the road. They're good on fuel, and have decent power. The problem with them is in the PTO clutches (at least on Nuffields). The hydraulics and PTO are on one hand clutch. You pull the clutch back, set it to either hyd. or PTO (not both, either) and let the clutch out. It does not work well for bushhogging, etc. Maybe they improved this on the Leylands, but the old Nuffields we have are like that. Overall, a tough built and reliable tractor, but could've used some improvements, such as making them not vibrate so bad, they'll shake you to pieces.

No experience but a search found spares in UK.
Take a look at tractorsparepartscouk.
But model 262 is as close as I can find.

Leylands were never popular in Britain and are difficult to find parts for over here. But there are better parts sources over your side if you are happy with second-hand parts. Mid west tractor parts in Minnesota had about 20 of the bu&&ers in their lot 2 yrs ago.
Engines and hydraulics are good, brakes and clutch are the weak bits. So if you have long flat fields they should be OK
