Had a beautiful day here on sunday so the boys and I drug out the thrower and shot some clays, then we had the treat of shooting some black powder!

That a dragoon, or a Walker? I`m not as up on the big ones as I should be, I have a repop 1851 brass frame navy, and a nicer 1860 army, with a navy grip on it. Some of the best fun I`ve ever had with guns.

That one is a dragoon, my wifes uncle also brought out his Walker too. It was the first time I, and my boys had ever shot one, it was quite a treat!

I was shown a trick by an older gentleman, he takes off the grips, breaks the gun down, wipes the big chunks off and boils it. Then a abundant application of oil. Seems to work pretty well.

I get my 1858 Remmington repro out 5 or six times a year. Its stainless and has the 8 or 8 1/2 inch barrel cant remember off hand. its a lot of fun and not that expensive to shoot. They get a little messy after 50 rounds, i also boil mine and give it a generous oiling afterward. Im gonna get me one of them walker colts some day, that was the most powerful revolver produced until the advent of the .357 magnum.

I always wanted to get an 1858 Remington. Thought they looked neat and you could reload quickly with a spare cylinder. Friend of mine said if you are going to shoot it you just as well shoot it a lot because when you are done you need to clean it with hot soapy water. Wish I had gotten one years ago. Do you cast your own lead ball or buy them?

This is my wifes uncles so I dont know alot about it but I think he buys his lead balls. When we got done I did have to dig one out of the back stop for a momentoe for my son.

Shot a deer with one this year at about thirty feet, dropped it like a rock. Oddly enough bullet didnt even go through, shot through both front shoulders and it was under the hide on the off side.Didnt even expand any, could have loaded it back up and shot it again!

Love 'em.
BP is my favorite hunting followed by archery.
Have a Ruger Army in .44 and Italian AMS in .36 as a Navy gun.

As expected the Ruger is a better made gun. Both are fun to shoot. Using them in HS play right now for Baker Co. FL 1861-1961. Kids are having a blast firing off the percussion caps in a shootout scene :)

I have a repro 1851 Confederate Navy .44 cap 'n ball six shooter.

It's a blast. (Pun intended).

25 yrs ago, after trying several bp pistols, I bought an 1858 Remington copy. As many of you mention, they must be cleaned after each shooting without fail, whether its SS or blued, black powder or Pyrodex.

I often loaded it so that the cylinder would just barely turn without the ball dragging. IIRC it
would chronograph close to 1200fps, magnum pistol
velocities. It would often put 3 out of 5 shots
in a 5 gal. bucket at 100 yds, if I did my part.
I wish I still had it.

Are the Re-Pro's the ones Made in Italy/Assembled in Marietta, Ohio..??

I have a set I only need to finish a .31 and a .44 Dragoon and I will have them restored ..!

Pretty easy to get New Parts for them..

Ron..

Glad to see him using hearing protection.
When I got into guns we didn't bother with it and then got bigger guns. Now I have a constant ringing in my ears. I make my kids wear it anytime we go out. We all have bad eyes and wear glasses. While not likely as good as something made just for shooting, they still have to offer some eye protection

Shoulda mentioned, it's one of the more accurate, if not the most accurate, of the handguns I own.

It's at least as accurate as I am.

After the Civil War, a lot of these were converted to fire cartridges. Wouldn't mind getting hold of one of them.

Use .36 colt flask at 25 grains FFF, .456/7 ball instead of .451/4, Grease top of ball and 1858 replica made in Italy shoots good target grooups. Get out in campground, informal target shoot at beer cans, bottles and shoot, slow reload and shoot again while other with cartridge guns watch. The get a $20.00 bet on shooting 10 beer bottle CAPS in timed fire limit-pick on guys with snubs that have already finished some beers. The accepter of bet has seen time to reload and figures he has advantage, lays down money and we line up with 20 bottle caps in line, start firing from opposite ends. Snubbie shooter does his 5 or 6, starts reload cartridges, black powder shooter (me) carefully shoots 6th cap and starts reload drill--as in loading lever down, cylinder pin pulled out and cylinder removed, loaded cylinder pulled from pocket and inserted, cylinder pin pushed in, loading lever up under barrel and fire number 7 bottle cap while snubbie is still inserting last couple cartridges. Snubbie shooter wastes another 10 seconds saying "What the F did you do loading??" while cap and ball shoots number 8. Designated range master says 10 seconds left, snubbie shooter quick fires and missed, cap and ball gets number 9, then 10 and finally gets a 11 from snubbie shooters row. Score 11 to 7, pay up and the little extra just before shooting started about extra $20.00 for each of others cap shot means $40.00 to cap and ball shooter- I have extra gas money to get home. Another couple hundred in side bets by observers changes hands. Did that about 4 times one riding season, then everybody at rallies heard about it or had seen it and wouldn"t bet, had to use credit card at gas station going home. RN.

Got an 1851 Colt Navy in 44 cal love to shoot it! Black powder is definately in my blood. Got a 45 cal Tennessee rifle, two 50 cal Hawkins rifles, a 54 cal Hawkins, and a 58 cal Springfield. Can shoot em way cheaper than centerfire weapons, have taken several deer with mine over the years.

If you guys like shooting cap and ball or any old west guns look for a local SASS group in your area. Most have a shoot once a month. My brother and I have been shooting it for 10 years now and wish we discovered them 10 years earlier. Its Single action shooting society.
