$24 power steering kit for my IH B-275

Not many "deals" anymore on Ebay but . . . to my surprise I found two.

First - I got a power steering kit taken off an IH B-275 for $24 - plus $20 shipping - so $44 total.
I never saw any photos of it actually on the tractor, and had a bit of a time trying to figure how to install it.

Second - I got a brand new steering box also for an IH B-275. $125 plus $25 shipping. Complete with a new Mahindra wheel.

This is the time of year I repair many of my "user" tractors. My old B-275 got the power-steering kit, and my newer B-275 got the new box since the one on it was completely worn out.

Here's the new Mahindra steering for my older B-275 diesel (with CAV in-line air-governor pump).

Here's the power-steering that went into my newer B-275 (with CAV rotary pump). I don't have a clue how the pump was supposed to be hooked to the engine. There isn't much room. I put a double pulley on the alternator and then let that second pulley groove run the PS pump. Works great. I also had to fabricate a few missing brackets.

nice job! Could you post the picture of your case with the planter planting sweet corn I remember that picture you posted a long time ago, sure would like to see it again

Here it is. Looking at the photos I really miss spring. It's 5 degrees F right now. At least it's 5 above and not below - like it was a few days ago.

This Case VAC is the only tractor I've ever owned that I've done NO major repairs - ever. I bought it for $500 in 1979 and have never had to fix anything. Just points and a battery once in awhile.

nice pictures, and nice country some day the wife and I may take a weekend trip up that way, upstate ny is really beautiful, Is that a ford 309 corn planter?

Congratulations, LJD, with that $194, you just doubled the value, of your B-275! OK that was a little mean, but I have worked on one of those bathtubs full of gears, before, LOL! Glad it works for you, still gladder, I don't own it!

I've got two B-275s, one B-414, and one 3414. All built on the same platform and they are some of the most rugged little tractors I've ever come across.

Not sure what your issue is with them -but I love them. Much more tractor than many others in that age and size range. I've got a Ferguson TO-35, a MF-35 and Ford 641 - and they are less tractors then these British IHs. Also got a Deere 300 in the same size range -but I will say the Deere is a bit nicer - but it's also almost 10 years newer.

Yes, Ford 309 grain-drill as they called it. Great little planter but plates are very hard to find for it. Luckily I have all I need.

My experience was with British 2414 reversed forklift, numerous transmission problems, we called the transmashin! Also the usual dark prince Lucas electrical system. Not tryin to pick a fight, just listing the flaws we ran into. Glad yours works for you, I just wouldn't try another, LOL!

What is the problem with the Lucas electrical system. Fords I had they were a good system.

So you've never owned a B-275, yet feel comfortable making snide comments about them anyway - pointed towards their owners?

I can't comment on a 2414 since I've never seen one, nor worked on one.

B-275 has been my most used work-horse here for 30 years. Runs a 5 foot King Kutter rear PTO tiller, a 6 foot Deere PTO snowblower, pulls two 16" plows in hard soil on hills, etc. Transmission seems to be bullet-proof. My 3414 industrial hoe-loader has the same trans and is just as rugged.

My Ferguson TO-35 and Ford 641 cannot do the work the B-275 does.

I regard them as great "sleeper" buys. Maybe because of people like you, they often sell cheap. Live PTO, live hydraulics, differential lock, hi-low trans with gas or diesel - along with Cat. 1 three-point hitch and often with a $1000 price tag? That is pretty hard to match.

Also great parts support since Mahindra starting making most of the B-275 new again - with modern sheet metal on it.

And about Lucas? I've had tons of problems with the "Prince of Darkness" on my British cars and motorcycles. But no problems with Lucas stuff on farm tractors. Most problems I DO have with Lucas is the poor metal they use in the contactors inside their switches.

I replaced most of the switches at least once on the 584 I had. Some of the OE IH switch replacements were not Lucas.
