Manual for '99 Powerstroke

Got some good advice on here about my Powerstroke- so want to check the glowplug system. I have a manual from Navistar for an old 6.9 I had, and liked that style manual.

Is the glowplug system essentially the same in the Powerstroke? If not, I checked ebay and found a similar Powerstroke manual from Navistar, dated 1994 1/2- will that be the right one for my '99?

Thanks in advance-

When I had the 6.9, whenever it got harder to start, I'd check continuity on the glowplugs, and sure enough, a couple would be bad, I'd replace them, and it would start better.

Seems like I checked them in place, with an ohm meter- Remove wire to glowplug, one lead to glowplug input, other to ground, and you wanted 2 or 3 ohms. The bad ones would be open (infinite ohms). But that was quite a few years ago, and I may be "misremembering".

You can still do that to a 99, but the glowplugs are under the valve covers. The harness can be unplugged and you can test them through the under valve cover harness. I don't know which pins are for the plugs and which pins are for the injectors.

the little harnesses under the valve covers give lots of problems, and the plug that plugs into to the valve cover gasket, whitch is also part of the harness assy, they are availble from Dorman. so any autoparts should be able to get them.

I bought a diesel service manual (Haynes) through my local NAPA a couple years back.. It has some of the GM diesel stuff, and the 6.9/7.3 IDI and the 7.3 Powerstroke in it (unsure to what year though).. Not as good as a Navistar book I'm sure, but for $20, it has answered most every question I've had.. (Except why I had a hard start problem for a while LOL.. Still don't know what the cause was, but it decided to shape up and start as of lately.. LOL).. The cheap book gets into pretty good detail on the GP's, IMO..

Hope this helps.

If your engine is the 6.0 liter, you can get to the glowplugs/harness from the outside of the cylinder heads below the valve covers. On an IH vehicle at key-on time , each bank of glowplugs (4) pulls 52 amps, drops to 34, then 16 and finally cut off. If you can remove the harness from the head and ohm out each glowplug they should have 1-1.5 ohms resistance if I"m not mistaken. The amp draw test will tell you quicker than anything else if you have bad ones. Hope this helps.
