Plow Bolt questions

I have what appears to be a #7 plow bolt, sometimes known as a bucket tooth bolt. The problem is that in looking up replacements they all start larger sized than I am needing. I need 3/8 x 1 1/4 and 7/16 x 1 1/4.

They came off a Deere 472 disc plow, and the old parts #s have been replaced by #3 plow bolts.

Any ideas where to find them? I need 10 of the 7/16ths bolts and 4 of the 3/8ths size.

Thanks

McMaster, Grainger, and Fastenal have the larger sizes, usually 1/2 inch diameters and larger in grade 8.

The Parts Depot would probably have some, but you'd need to know OEM part numbers (IH, JD, Oliver, MH, and others used these) and find a dealer who orders from them.

These guys show a 3/8X1 1/8 gr.8 No. 7 head bolt. with a repair head. http://www.trinitylogisticsgroup.com/documents/plow_bolts.pdf They may have other sizes/grades/types not listed.

There are other places that will supply these in the size, grade, and head type you desire, but you're looking at a custom order of thousands or 10's of thousands of a single size of bolt.

Thanks tried Mc-Master-Carr and Graingers before ever asking here. Also found the Trinity page you linked prior to coming here. computer at work doesn't like large PDF files

Around here they are at any farm store or implement dealer. You can get them by mail from agrisupply also

Locally, only the common/regular No. 3 head, clipped head, and elliptical/danish head plow bolts are available at farm stores and implement dealers here. The older row crop cultivator bolts that have a different head style are still available, but aren't stocked anywhere around here.

No. 6 head, No. 7 head (smaller diameters), Patten or Patent Head, AC's special head plow bolts, t-i-t (remove hyphens) head plow bolts and a few other old styles are not available anywhere locally I can find.
Some No. 4 head plow bolts are available from implement dealers, but not stocked. Some sickle mowers used No. 4 head plow bolts to hold the bar on.

I can't find where AgriSupply has No. 7 head plow bolts listed.

I've asked at every local hardware and farm store, and every local implement and auto parts dealer probably within 25+ miles. Only 2 or 3 guys knew what No. 7 head/reverse key plow bolts were. All were nice guys and tried to help, but told me I was about 30 years to late. Nobody had any or could get any No. 7 head plow bolts from their suppliers in the smaller (5/16, 3/8, 7/16) sizes.

The larger size No. 7 head plow bolts can be found from McMaster, MSC, Grainger, Fastenal, and others as they are used for cutting edges and points on industrial and construction equipment.

Eventually I got some No. 7 head 3/8 diam. repair head IH/WP bolts (I think they were 1.25, 1.5, and 1.75 inches long) a few years ago from the Parts Depot that a C-IH dealer ordered for me. The dealer didn't even have a book/fische card to find part numbers, I had to do the legwork. At the time, CIH had 1 part number that showed up as "good" and a quantity being in stock in it's computer system, but when I ordered it, it came back as the stock being depleted and no longer available.

I agree, except that I need 3/8ths and 7/16ths #7 bolts and I have only found them starting at 5/8ths, anything smaller is carried as a #3 bolt.

I have some new ones from a JD Chisel/sweep. That I had several years ago. I will check the size tomorrow, and post again.

So I'm no guru at these things, but from a quick Google search, it looks like the #7 has a "tapered" head (similar to that of a wood screw) and has what can best be described as a "key" to keep it from turning when tightening/loosening... Yes??

If I got that about right, I will look to see if I have some.. In cleaning the shed up, I found a drawer full of bolts.. One half was carriage bolts, the other half is plow bolts.. There has to be nearly 30 pounds of the plow bolts in there.. I bought them at auctions over the years and unsure as to EXACTLY what all is in there.. I believe the majority will be what appears to be #3 and a few clipped heads, but will have a look to see if I can help.

Brad you are correct about the #7 bolt head configuration.

I guess I better research the #7 head.

OK, forgot about the key lock style

Trinity Logistics Group has a minimum order quantity of 100 I believe and a minimum order of $70 so, you're buying even more than 100. And you have to prepay with a check, they don't accept credit cards yet. They are really wholesale distributor/manufacturer supplier because they want you to send them 3 letters of credit reference and a vendor application before they'll deal with you.

I was going to make a separate post for this to make a bigger deal out of it. But, Trinity is a supplier for Fastenal, so if you want to send e-mails to Fastenal and convince them to carry these bolts and hassle your local store, maybe we could accomplish something together. There obviously is demand for these bolts, but how much demand remains to be seen.

I think this would be a good addition to the product line of Tyler Buchheit: http://www.mrbtractors.com/

A plow bolt is not just a plow bolt. I have two different types of #3. Both 7/16" but one is 1 3/4" with the head being 7/8" with a 1/2" sq, and the other is 2 1/2" with a head of 13/16" and a sq of 7/16. Now I see while the dealer asked what they were for.
