Hey all, I have a 1974 ford f250 4x4 with an automatic C6 transmission, just put a plow on it this year...My question is why would it hesitate to go in to drive...did not have any problems with it until a week or so ago not a daily driver but would like to know what might be wrong with it. It goes into reverse fine but drive it hesitates and then goes in, going down the road it shifts just like its supposed to, but its almost like you have to rev the engine to get it to go into drive havent pushed much snow with it yet..havent had much up in this neck of the woods this year. I just changed the fluid and filter in it and it seems like its better but not 100% yet. Thanks for any and all replies...later BOB

Forward clutch pac is going to LUNCH. A C6 is not had to rebuild and the rebuild kit are not much money. Now if ya could find some old stuff from a police or taxi C 6 you could beef it up with six plates and 6 clutches in each drum then add a TRANS GO tow and go kit to the valve body an a bigger cooler then you would have a tough trans . Sorry i do not have any of the heavy duty stuff left , last i had went into my 78 F250 after i ate the fourth factor trans . in less then a year of plowing . Once i did the rebuild it was still going strong up to the day she took a head on six years later . She got hit hard enough that it broke the trans along with the ft. axle and engine and bent the rear axle .

Check to see if the auto parts gave you the correct filter. Back around the same year as your truck, the auto parts gave me the wrong filter. I knew I had a good transmission, yet the truck would not move as it should. Turns out when I put the oil pan back on, it was tight up against the filter, which restricted oil flow. Filter hung down more than the original filter. I replaced with correct filter, and all was fine. Another Example: Your truck is a 1974. Prior owner pulled out bad transmission, and put another good transmission back in. The good transmission may have come out of a 1972 or 1976 truck. Different C-6 transmissions used different filters. That's been my experience.

Yes it does, dosent slip at all when plowing, get into a heavy plow with it it will spin the tires in in fourwheel drive....and not on ice...Thanks Bob

If you decide to rebuild it this place has a very handy video showing you how to do it. One of my nephews used it to get his old pickup back on the road. It must make it look easy because because before he started he didn't have an idea on how to even pull it from the pickup.

66 to 75 use one pan, 76 and newer use a deeper pan (holds an extra quart) and the some 4X4s have 3" "drop" section in the pan.
