4755 good or bad?

We are looking at a John Deere 4755 mfwd powershift. I have heard that on these tractors when the waterpump goes out it will leak into the crankcase. The waterpump started leaking externally when we looked at it, so now it has a freshly rebuilt waterpump. Other than the waterpump problem, is there any other things that are known to go wrong with these tractors? Pros, Cons?

I had a 4955, basically the same tractor. It was a good tractor and very good on fuel. Never any problems. It had around 10,000 hrs on it when I traded it off. I've heard of them with up to 20,000. A lot of Deere engines have gear driven water pumps. I wouldn't let it scare me. Really good tractors, but anything with that many hours makes me nervous.

The gear drive water pump was not any issue on just that model. It was on all of that vintage JD 466 engines. They all had a gear driven water pump. Many other brands/models of engine have them too. Just watch for water lose and check your oil, not that big of a deal.

As for the whole tractor. They where pretty good tractors. I know most of them where turned up to over 200 hp and still held up well. I have had several that I used then sold. I like the 15 sp. PS but wish they had 540/1000 PTO rather than just 1000 only.

Correction: 466 had belt driven water pumps such as the 40 series Rowcrops. 6076 engines had the gear driven water pumps. First photo is of a 40 series RC water pump and 2nd photo is of 55 series WP

Very good tractors. I have a 4955 it is very good. I don't agree that they are good on fuel but still a good tillage tractor.

TX Jim a 6076 engine is still just 466 CU engine. It was just the " new" metric method of JD listing engine size. Six cylinder 7.6 liter displacement. It just had a different MODEL number. Just like a 496 CU/8.1 liter in the 7810 was a 6081 model. I always called it a 496

So the statment is not WRONG that 466 cu motor of that VINTAGE has a gear driven water pump. I guess I could have stated 55 series 466 cu or 7.6 liter OR 6076 model. ALL mean the same thing.

I just about NEVER use the metric number on things. I "THINK" in English sizes. LOL Liters don't have the same meaning as Cubic inches to me. I always am converting back to English.

If you'll go back and read your statement which is and I'll quote you

then your statement is incorrect. 40 series rowcrop tractors with a 466 CID engine didn't have a gear driven water pump!! Look at the first photo I posted and state that it isn't the correct photo for a 40 series water pump if I'm incorrect.

Wasn't it a big deal to make sure the weep hole was kept open on the gear driven ones. Seems to me they had a felt or sponge in there that would plug easily with dirt so you didn't get an indication the pump was seeping. I worked at Deere for a while but my brain was basically seeing RED so to speak after all the years on the red ones.

TXJIM what the he!! can't you understand about VINTAGE!!!!!! We where talking about a 55 series NOT a 40 series tractor. The JD 4755s where made in 1989-1991. The JD 4440 where made only until 1982. Seven years before. There fore a different VINTAGE!!!!

Why don't you understand that you stated "ALL 466 engines" had a gear driven water pump which was INCORRECT vintage or not. I think information given out on this or any other forum should be CORRECT not INCORRECT.

Yes this thread started about a 4755 and yes I mentioned a 4440. The reason I mentioned a 4440 is that it has a 466 with a belt driven not gear driven water pump.

Don't worry too much about txjim wondering . He means well enough.Usually blames me however for his introduction of off topic data.
