OT NI 5209 mower question loud

asking here + implement page: just purchased a NI 5209 disc mower. Hooked it to the tractor, turned it on, and that thing is screaming loud. I am use to a haybine's noise level. So are they all so loud? The cutterbar grease levels are fine. Also, seems a couple knife tips are just touching the opposing disc turtle, problem or normal?

Depends on the kind of loud... a high speed whine is normal... but if it sounds like a clattering noise then not so normal...

They are a lot noisier than a haybine, so that is not unusual..

Are the knife tips touching when it's turned over by hand or when it's up to speed? And is there any play in the knife bolts? Sometimes it's just a bit of wear, or in the worst case it's play in the bearings al;owing things to get a little out of time...

They are much loader than a sickle haybine. Also the ones with individual gearboxes are nosier than the ones with a common cutter bar gear case. I think the complete cutter bar gear case absorbs/dissipates the noise.

I had a NI 5109 and it screamed too. It was much better when in hay and on the ground. In the shop you almost needed ear plugs.

I have a 5209 also and it is a little noisy but they are louder than a haybine. When I got mine I had to put new knives on it because the original owner had two different size blades on it and they touched eachother.I have practicaly rebuilt the whole mower in the past three years and I have found out that some parts are different on the red 5209 than the grey 5209.Not all of the parts but some of them are.just a thought for you to remember.

I was talkin with a couple of fellows, at an auction, leaning on a 5209 new idea conditioner. the one in question, had a new gearbox, the old one was sitting below it, with a twisted pto input shaft. Also had a few turtles on the half shell, laying under it. He said that on the old ones, the
turtles drove from the same common shaft, which can twist. He also said that the turtles needed to be dis-assembled, and greased, he did it each winter. He said it takes a special lube, I said what, turtle wax?? we both got a chuckle, and I moved on, cause I was just leanin on the MC, not really interested.
