Been looking for a drill and finally found one that wasn't scrap metal. The boxes are in good shape and everything is free. I greased it and then was diassappointed that only one side of the trip clutch (there are two) is working. Any tricks to getting these old deals to work? The chain and sprockets areworking.

Part of the clutch is stuck from not being used probably. Take pry bar or rod and see if you make the whole thing turn. Sometimes they stick and have to be forced a little then usually work okay if you greased it.

Trip mechanisms are pretty simple mechanically. Without doubt some parts are rusted or stuck and need to be freed up with penetrant, etc. in order for it to work.

There's a good bet, the throwout spring inside the power lift is broken or missing. If it's broken, it won't let the clutch lock up or down. Four bolts hold it on the frame, and a couple of cotter keys hold the linkage on. Remove it from the drill, take it apart and clean it. Be sure the spring is intact. If need be, you can still get one from your friendly local JD dealer. It's a very stout spring. I've refurbed and channeled several FB drills like the one in your picture, about every one had at least one power lift with a broken spring. Holler or send me an email if you'd like a PDF parts breakdown of it. HTH Mark

Just like a trip plow (virtually same mechanism) - years of use and greasing- they need to be taken apart, old hard grease removed, often a broken spring replaced, .....re-assemble and they are good for years, again.

The trip mechanism wouldn't work on my uncle's old plow. Turned out to be the spring inside was rusted off and broke. $2 spring from the hardware store and we were back in business.

If the rope pulls but nothing happens, it's probably the spring.
