Classic diesel motorcycle

I've had my 1959 British Royal Enfield for over 40 years. Meteor-Minor 500 twin. I just found out that not only do they still make the 1959 models brand new in India - they have also made a few diesel versions. Kind of neat and an off mix with classic British styling and a modern diesel jammed in. Rated at 200 MPGs.

There is no way that has original wheels . It looks like a 77 Yamaha with the seat and mag wheels. Buying an India made bike is probably not the best buy.I also see a Harley-Davidson military bike on a new calender I have. They have had them for quite a while now but they used to be Can-Am's. The Harley looks like a copy of a seventies Can-Am.I have a book about Marine Corps motorcycle use. When I was a kid an older kid had an Enfield Indian. Took years for the younger kids in town to learn what that really was. Indians last stand went British. The new Royal Enfields are hand striped .Saw a guy striping a tank at the Indian [country of India] factory on another site.

gee thanx...gave me another opp to kick myself in the azz for ever selling a Ariel Square Four that sorta fell into my lap...guy offered me 4 times what i paid less than 2 hours later...grrrrrrrrrr

Yeah, Royal Enfield and the American Indian name got merged at some point. I have an Indian Tomahawk bike with the American Indian logo on the tank.

As to quality in India? It can't possible be worse then then the original British versions. As I understand it, the Indians bought the original RE tooling and just hammer the stuff out.

We all have something we wish we would have not got rid of. One of my regrets is I sold a air water cooled V6 airplane engine. for 200.00 bucks. This engine came off of a plane used in WW1. It was a Hispano-Suiza. Kind of rare now.
Then my 46 ford I sold for 25.00. The list goes on.I better stoop before I start crying. Stan

There are some over in India but by far the most common bike is Hero Honda 120's Those are basically the old 110 bikes.

When I first saw one in India I thought it would be neat to bring one in as I knew we were gonna bring in a container anyway. Did a quick search and found there is a importer in Faribult, MN. Wasn't gonna go through the hassle to bring in something that wasn't gonna be a rarity here.

Reason Honda's are Hero Honda's there and now are just Hero's is until recently India had tarrif's that about doubled the price of any imported goods.

As to diesal bikes, Diesel is heavily subsidised over gas. Basically they don't charge road tax on diesel and they do on gas, bout 30% difference in price. Haven't seen one yet but CNG and LP are even more heavily subsidised so one of the next times I expect to see a two wheeler running one of these fuels. Three wheeler and regular taxi's are required to run CNG or LP in Delhi state.

I bought a new Royal Enfield Bullet two years ago; it looks like it's right out of the 50's, except it has electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition, front disc brake. I love it. So far it has been oil tight.
