Had a skunk show up at the house Tuesday morning. Got the dog inside and skunk went away. That night at 10 PM the skunk got into my son's dog pen and attacked his basset hound pup. It was supposed to get it's first rabies shot tomorrow. Shot the skunk. Called vet and health dept. Had the skunk tested and it was rabid. Had to kill the pup and a cat that was injured last week in a fight. There have been rabid cows found near here in the past month. Be aware.

Would help people in your area if you said where you are at. Ya it is a good idea to be careful any place but in this case it might help some one close to you

Where"s here? Couldn"t you have held off on killing the pup kept it penned up for a week and watch from a distance? There"s a chance it didn"t contract the disease

Pup would have to be in a double fence for six months. Look at CDC rules. With grand kids around, could not take chances.

We bought some hay, baled in the field- went to pick it up, and a friendly dog came out to "help". Kids said, "Look at the tag, dad, what's his name?" I looked, and replied, "It appears that he has the unlikely name of Rabies".

So each trip back to the field, kids would yell "Rabies!" and he would jump into their arms, just so happy to be alive. Fine time had by all.

Since the tree-huggers and Do-Gooders Ruined the Fur market, nobody manages the Over-Populations any more...
The Results (here in Ohio, anyway) is Rabis..

Had a problem with some Skunks earlier this year..checked and the Div of Wildlife said it is Illegal to release a captured Skunk, in Ohio..they are all to be destroyed..
Raccoons are over-running things, too.
Can't get any Grapes in the fall, Coons get them all..
I trapped the coons..kept every Groundhog hole FULL all summer...!!!
They just keep coming in..got 37 out of ONE Barn..!

Interesting places this happens in. In Mass, New York... heck all of the northest I would presume, the state drops 'rabies bate' all over the place, wild animals, or you pet, can eat it, and get the same as a vaccination. They won't catch it or spread it.
As far as your own animals, a rabies shot is ..10 bucks? Sometimes free clinics, but if you have a yard of livestock you got to pay someone to come and treat them. I knew guys near my old farm that would watch the planes drop the bate, and go in the woods and find enough 'kibbles' to bring home to the gang. I told them to hang around the airport the DEC plane gas up at and give them a case of beer for a bag of pellets, less work. I have a feeling some states are so broke, they quit bating, and blame the environmental movement, cause this will get worse,no one wants to admit being cheap..
Whatever works I suppose. Could just use all your house pets and farm animals for target practice, that works too...

Arkansas has had over 40 reported cases of rabies this year. a normal year is 20. One case this year was a bull. Since last fall I've killed over 20 skunks on my place and misses a few oportunities because I left my gun at home.
