Remember when you could buy almost anything in a magazine?

You could even order it complete with a 2 HP Clinton engine, WOW! Imagine the attorneys of today having a field day with this toy!

And there are more interesting magazine bargains below:

Oh, what a joy when the Sears catalog arrived!
Don't know why, exactly---it wasn't like I could just order all that neat stuff.

Pretty neat post! Thanks! Very scary to think back at all the crazy things we did as kids on the farm. How the heck did we survive? We didn't have the nanny grabbing our shirt or stacking 10 pounds of safety gear on us. You got banged up you got patched up and you didn't pull that stupid stunt again (until the next time anyway). Small wonder you can't pull kids away from video games and TV, I haven't seen much in the way of safety requirements for those things yet.

Google Pics. Saw the picture, had to look closer. Clicked the link and WOW all the really interesting stuff that folks have made as well as magazine ads from the past. I guess you noticed there are 100 pages of things to look at, so far I've viewed about a dozen. Some really interesting stuff indeed!

Still haven't forgiven myself for never getting around to buying a pair of those X-ray vision glasses.

Always also wanted a motor kit for my bike, but folks figured I'd end up dead, so no go on that.

Maybe this explains why the new generation of kids don't have the skills and abilities their parents do- they aren't allowed to do anything or fail at anything. It may sound crass but some of the stupid stuff you do as a kid is pert of growing up- it's called "learning". We don't let our kids learn so they end up making mistakes in their 30's they should of made (and learned from) in their teens.

That $129.50 for a complete unit would have overhauled Dad's old Allis twice back in 1958. Maybe that's why he didn't buy me one and let me build a couple of Whizzer motor bikes for about $10 a piece. I remember all those ads in the American Rifleman in the 50's and 60's and thought pretty soon I'll have enough money. By the time I did the gun control act of 1968 banning mail order sales had passed and it was too late.

It's funny to read some of the old Do-it-yourself books. I was looking at some recently from the early 60's telling you how to build a trailer using the tail wheel off of a particular bomber, "that should be readily availabe at any military surplus facility". Saddly I think that the days of the Do-it-yourselfer have all but come to an end because everything is made disposible.

I remember as a kid my dada getting the Sear's farm and ranch rag. I was really excited when they started offering a loader for the garden tractors. The older, buy plans or the kit and build it yourself dozer!
