Massey 285- fixing spindle threads (pictures)

Last fall we found the threads on one of the front spindles on our 285 were stripped, so Dad got a used one from the bone yard. This weekend I broke a spindle on our 1855, so now I've got a couple to fix.

Here's pics of my repair on the 285's spindle.

I welded it up, set it up in a VMC, and had a thread mill program made. Took a little time and wouldn't be cost effective for the average joe to pay to have it done, but I enjoy doing this sort of repair for myself.

Having access to a mill, lathe, and CNC are the cats meow! We have a prototype department at work that has bailed me out of a jam lots of time...not to mention saved me a fair amount of $$$ too!

Nice work.

Donovan,

First off, nice work.

Secondly, can you HONESTLY say you didn't experience any
elevated "pucker factor" when you reached for the cycle start
button on the thread mill program ?

I know I am just looking at a picture, but that vise hasn't
exactly got a mouthful to hang on to.

I am not trying to "dress you down" here, just putting myself in
that situation my P.F. needle would have been at the top of the
yellow-maybe just entering the red zone.

Ya gotta love Kurt vises- especially when things don't slip.

What brand of VMC ? What kind of control, Fanuc, Mitsubishi ??

Thanks for keeping the Massey alive !

Can't say I was too worried about it. One of our programmers made up the program for me after hours and he was really mild on it as well. I know the set-up wasn't the most rigid, but there wasn't much else I could've done. I tried to have the larger forging in the vise, but I wouldn't have been able to get it indicated in straight because the post was hitting the table and there wasn't much to grab on in the vise if it were. I guess I've done harder setups and other jobs that were much more nerve wracking. Earlier in the week I was tapping multiple holes, and the tap was programmed for over 2000 RPM's. I think it was a 1/4" tap. Worked great, with nothing more than coolant running on it.

The machine is a Tree 1260 (25 x 50 table) w/ a Dynapath control. I also run a Takumi w/ Fanuc controller on it, with a 40 x 70 table.
