buying a trailer to haul my tractors and implements

I'm in the process of buying a PJ deck over trailer it's 22' and 102" wide. Heres my question. I will be driving my tractor up there and would like to put an implement or 2 at the same time. I'm also going to be winching things like old pull behind combines up on board as well as disabled vehicles. So I was going to go with the dove tail and fold up ramps to make it easier to load but I'm worried about losing the 2 or 3 feet capacity in the dove tail area. Another option is the pop up dove tail but I dont see how that will help if you have to roll something up there and need the last 2 feet you wont be able to deploy the ramps because the equipment will be sitting on it. The winch, they want $1800 to mount an 8 thousand pound winch, this seems way too expensive. Should I just custom order the winch plate and do the rest my self?

PJs come from North Texas, near Paris, TX .....
Are you buying new? I just bought a 23+5 (length plus dove tail with triple fold down ramps) new from Load Max by Load Trail, Sumner, TX, owned by a brother of the PJ outfit (story is they both founded and built load star, one got mad, founded PJ),triple ramps are handy for tricycle tractors etc.longer dovetails have less steep ramp, I'd go with 4-5 ft,as far as deck length, at least 20ft, propably 23-25 plus dove if you want to haul all that stuff. Had mine built, with winch plate and a few extras. I am in the process of installing a Harbor Freight 12K winch, bought it on sale with 2 yrs additional warranty, figure worth taking a chance for 578.99 total!!
Unless you get a good used one cheap, it may be be better in the long run to get one built to your liking for a little more, all is new, the way you want it. Email is open if you have questions, phone 580-513-1687, Central Time. Ralph in Oklahoma.

Personally I would opt for a tilt bed for what you have described. The cost of the winch installed includes their liability if welds etc fail. Just my thougts. Give us a picture of what you decide on. Bob

I am looking to buy also. I want a low profile triple axle thats 30' long. Dealer looked at me funny when I told him NO dovetail and NO ramps. After I get it I will be cutting the gooseneck post off and rigging in a Hydraulic ram. I can back up to anything I want raise the hydraulic ram and set the tail of the trailer onto the ground.

If you are worried about the extra room on the deck with the dove tail why not just get a 25ft deck with a dove tail. Anything less is just about not enough room for me. I like a PJ or Load Max and Trail Master trailer myself. Hydru. dove tail trailers are nice but cost too much for me.

I wanted to stay in the 22' range since I'll be pulling it with a 1/2 ton suburban and figured 22' is as short as I can live with. I dont like tilt beds, because I like to set things on the deck with the tractor then drive in behind it. I will also use this to haul 3 one ton bags of feed at a time and 3 or 4 pallets of pumpkins and melons to the merchants during the season.

I have a 22 ft PJ and the dovetail isn't a problem.....always a way to load things so that area is used. I love the long tongue on them, but they do take some room to turn around, one of the reasons I haven't gone to the 24'

It sounds like you will have 12000 to 15000 lbs of weight behind that 1/2 ton vehicle. I would be concerned about stopping it.

texcl, I just bought a older (2001) Kaufman Trailer made over at Kaufman, Tx just a little ways SE of Dallas on I-45. It was a local owner, so the old girl was never far from the place it was made. It is a 25+5 gooseneck, with2 fold over ramps, and 2 7K axles under it. Was able to get the M.C.O. on it since it was traded back to the original point of sale there at the factory site in Kaufman and they had the original info on it. With Texas new laws the Title or M.C.O. is a Must!
I sure do like mine, and it pulls nicely too. Only draw back to mine is, Kaufman's were known to have crappy paint jobs in that time frame.
Go take a look! hope this helps.

I have a 30ft with a 10ft hydraulic tail,works great.It's made by rice trailers in iowa.

I have a 20 ft 14 K sure track implement trailer. It's really only 18ft with a 2 ft dovetail. It's only 81 inches between fenders. A deckover will be taller, wider and the incline angle would be steaper. I wouldn't want anything taller. I pull mine with a 1500 GMC. Empty, my trailer is 3100 pounds and it's the tail wagging the dog. The tires are inflated to 95 psi and when you hit a small bump, the trailer is like a basket ball, bounces all over and jars the truck. Personally, I wouldn't try putting two tractors on my trailer. Once helped a guy haul a ford 4x4 100 miles. With a weight distribution hitch and electric brakes, things were fine. That my limit with a 1500 GMC. Putting 5000 pounds on my trailer is all I want to pull with my truck. A larger size trailer will only weigh more and you will definately will need a larger truck to be safe.

Sure-track makes a 10K trailer the same size and it weigh empty around 2900 pounds. Kinda of wish I had bought it instead because there is no way I can safely haul 7000 # of cargo.

I have an extended dovetail (lower loading angle) with a 2 piece spring assisted full width ramp(one hand lift ). No problem hauling 2 H's and a 400 and no worries hitting them ramps with a narrow front or steel wheels.

I ended up getting the 22' flat deck pj trailer and got a special order extra long 8' ramp installed. It is 33" tall and I have 4' ramp extenders that will bring the angle to where I can load just about any car. Realisticly I might put a car on there once every couple years. Mostly pallets of produce and farm equipment. I thought that when I visit family in Kansas and Texas I could haul tractors and farm equipment for folks to pay for the gas.
