A couple weeks ago I was asking your opinions on a 90 motorhohme with a Ford 460. Someone suggested a newer one. I bought a 02 Jayco 26 ft. It cost a whole lot more, but may be a better choice in the long run. So I have a question on the transmission. The truck is a E450 Super Duty, with 37,000 mi. The fluid is not burnt, but has that used smell, and it is light brownish in color. I am fairly sure it hasen't been changed, Don't know for sure. So that is one of the first things I want to do. The owners manual isn't very clear to me on what type of fluid to use. It has two transmissions to choose,a 4R100 or a 4R70W. Each one uses a different fluid. Any thoughts on what trans my Ford has. Stan

My F-150 tells me what fluid to use on the dipstick handle. If it's not there figure out what transmission you have- pretend you're trying to buy a transmission filter, the Fram book at Walmart or Fleet Farm will tell you how to ID your transmission. If you're still in doubt after you ID the trans go to your local Ford store and ask the service department what Ford's recommendation is for that transmission.

CONGRATULATIONS and welcome to the friendly RV Family.

I cant tell you which fluid to use but I do suggest you have it professionally serviced (drain, flush, filter, refill, perhaps a magnet perhaps an external cartridge filter etc) and on all my RV trannys I replaced the oil with SYNTHETIC FLUID. Also I added an external series Transmission Cooler.

Here are my Summer 2012 RV Tour Plans if youre interested.

We borrowed Tammy's dad's motorhome. As far as I am concerned, an RV is a ruined vacation waiting to happen. But you would have had to have been there to appreciate the story.

If its the 4r100, theres a procedure you need to use to flush the cooler lines, etc. Just changing the fluid in the pan and filter isnt enough, gets less than half of the fluid out. I dont recall the specifics, but it can be found, or use to be, in the links at thedieslestop on the net.

I use synthetic in all of'em except the ones that call for SP..

The 100 uses mercon XT-2-QDX (what ever that is)
the 70 uses Mercon V ( basically a synthetic)

It never hurts to use OEM spec fluid and were a synthetic is not called for upgrade to a synthetic...

What we like is not having to haul suitcases in and out of motel rooms. We mostly travel in Feb. to get out of the cold. Some time before Oct. we'll need to go to E.Texas and retrieved our 5th wheel weather was too ifie to bring it home the first of Mar.

John if you want to camp in NW Colorado we have 2000 acres to dry camp elevation 6000.forty miles north of I 70 and 140 south of I 80.

Thanks Bill, may do that sometime. On this trip after were at Rocky Mtn Natl park it will have been 6 weeks and by then were bout ready to get home......

Have it professionally flushed every 20K miles.

For me this is not one of my do it myself projects. I installed an extra capacity oil pan with cooling fins, oil temperature gauge, and a fan controlled cooler.

Over kill, probably.

Go through a failed transmission fiasco in the middle of a vacation trip and I suspect you'll understand my point of view.
