I always thought you bought seed potatoes, diced them (with the eyes) and planted them. Today, I saw some folks planting full baking size potatoes... Is there an advantage???

just curious

Great advantage to the seed store.
I always cut them up and leave one good eye per piece. Mine will be ready to dig and can in about 2 weeks. Planted first week of February.

Well I( learned a long time ago that people do thing differently. Not everyone does thing the same way. Suggest you ask them about it.

You get more plants per lb of potato by planting cut potatoes. With planting whole potatoes you get a boost in ability for the plant to weather some adversity. I was taught to cut up and plant. I have seen it done both ways.

Cutting seed invites rot.I get more feet of row with golf ball size seed. Some folks think planting big seed produces big potatoes, wrong.

Make sure you plant them with the eyes facing upward, otherwise they will grow into the ground and die. You need to plant dead nnalert, the same way, or they will get up to vote, in the next election!!!

Planted Purple Peruvians this year. Taste like regular potatoes and are high in those antioxidant things. I just get a kick out of eating purple stuff.

not really. Commercially, we'd aim for a 2 oz "seed piece." cut it too small and you're more likely to end up with a blind piece (no eyes) and it doesn't have as much energy to get the plant started. Too big and you waste money.

Cutting can encourage certain rot pathogens. One option is to apply a fungicide at the time of cutting or at planting. Another would be to allow the cut pieces to suberize or heal before planting. This only works with small quantities. If you can get all small tubers then it's a non-issue.

Maybe that's just what they had left over.... I just know it hurt me to see them nice big tators going in the ground like that.....
