Single acting Hyd. cylinder

Trying to rebuild one of the main lift cyl. on my "64 Ford 4000 loader(Wagner-Superior). It is a single acting WELDED cylinder. I got the packing nut off the end and the stack-up of packings out. BUT, I cannot get the snap ring out of the bore. It"s about 2" down and does not have any way to pry one of the ends down/out. The ends are square cut and no other notches anywhere else. The end nut compresses the packings against this snap ring and gland that it holds in place. I tried to push this gland back but it won"t budge. Which makes sense because the packings are compressing against this and so there has to be a shoulder there that won"t allow it to move any further in. Also, the way this ring is in there it is somewhat captured by this gland. Is this a non-serviceable unit? HELP!!

Its single acting, one fitting in bottom but could be anywhere below Vee packing there is no piston, big washer on end of rod. Just replace Vee set and go on.

I've run into rings like that before. The only way I've found to get them out is to grind the end of s flat blade screwdriver until it's repatively thin and then heat it and put a bit if a curve to it. With the curved, flat "screwdriver" you can usually get it hooked under the side of the ring enough to get it started coming out of the groove enough to get a thin, straight screwdriver under it to work it the rest of the way out of the groove. This isn't an exact science by any means so anything else you can come up with to do basically the ame thing might work just as well. In the end all I can say is here is an idea for you, and good luck.

They often have a small hole drilled in...where you can stick in a punch to "Push on the snap
ring" to get it out enough to get a screwdriver
under it, and pop it out. you usually have to
rotate the snap ring so an end is under the
drilled hole.
