O/T Ford type A automatic trans fluid

Can't find ford type A trans fluid any where. What is the substitute?

i dont think there is a substitute... I bought a case at napa about a month ago, looked like it was ten years old, for as much dust that was on it, they sold me the stuff for the newer fords first, Lucky I read the bottle as it stated on it that it is not to be used where type A is specified...so id be looking harder for the type A stuff, I am sure any auto parts store can get it ordered in for you...Bob

Back in the day, you had your Type A, and you had your Ford type. And ne'er the twain shall meet. Ford type was for (surprise!) Ford automatic transmissions, and Type A was for GM and Chryslers. Interchanging the two resulted in a harsh, but fair, result- your transmission died.

Type A is now Mercon, I think- but don't know what you do with old Ford Cruisamatics.

If I remember the main problem with the old type "A" was it used whale oil an additive, when we outlawed whaling it got difficult to make, eventually someone found another additive that did the same thing.

dextron 3 meets and exceeds all type F Ford requirements ,,, WORX fine in my 69 Mercury marquis convertible , Also in my CASE -o Matic 800..

I work in a major transmission facility here in Idaho, and the guy that managed our shop for 20+ years always maintained that both type F and dextron were interchangable with each other. The type F would give a firmer shift, whether used in a ford or gm, and the dextron would do the opposite - smoother, softer shifts. Of course, that applies to the older stuff. Anything newer than the mid 90's or so require new additive packages, mostly leaning toward dextron. The Mercon fluid would probably be the closest equivalent to the old type F.

Type A was replaced with Dextron which then was replaced with Dextron II and then Dextron III etc.
