Need info on marker used to lay out steel prior to cutting with torch, supposed to glow bright with heat,my 77 year old eyes are needing mor help.Thank you GP PS not talking soapstone

Not sure this is the stuff, but Orschlen's here sells a metal marking silver pen that is like $13-15.00. For that much, it'd better light up!

neighbor always carried a flat white stick in his pocket when I was a kid that would make a bright white mark on metal like chalk but didn't rub off easy. Kreal or something like that... Haven't seen any in years but would sure like to have some....

Soap stone is the most common marker for steel but
there's also Silver Streak. You want a thin line for
the most accurate cutting and sometimes it's really
helpful to make a bunch of center punch marks on
your line because they won't get rubbed off. I find
if I warm the steel a little with the torch first,
the soapstone line is brighter and doesn't rub off
as easily.

I was at our local ACE hardware store Sat morning, and remembered this post, While looking through the welding supplies, I found these "Markal Welders Pencils" that they carry under the Forney brand name. Theses are advertised to light up when welding or cutting, and for a pair of them for $1.99, I was willing to gamble.
Tried them tonight on some torch cuts, and the worked pretty good!
