h farmall 12 volt conversion

The starter is fine.

You will need to replace the light bulbs with 12V ones, or they will go "POOF" when you turn them on the first time. One bright flash, then nothing.

With 12 volts,EVERYTHING is now useing 12 volts.Uou can use the original 6v starter, but the light bulbs, etc.will have to be changed ...

Starter will be on 12 volts. You will notice it spins a lot faster. You will have to get 12 volt light bulbs. NAPA or any auto parts store can match up the 6 volt bulbs. You will also need a resistor in the line leading up to the coil. Generator will have to be rebuilt as 12 volt unless you are installing an alternator.

(quoted from post at 09:36:16 06/04/12) Using an alternator, does it need to be "polorized" like with a generator?
Nope! Ground polarity of an alternator "is what it is" (it's inherent the internal electronics when it is manufactured). Polarity is usually stamped on the case.

Unlike with a generator, polarity cannot be changed by flashing the output terminal. Attempting to do so can destroy it instantly!

do yourself a favor.. forget getting an ignition resistor and instead just get a real 12v coil.. napa ic14sb works fine...no resistors..

If your question is about the wiring, as long as the original wires are in good shape they will be fine. With double the voltage, the amperage will be half of what it was on 6 volts. Wiring is sized to handle the amperage load so the original wires are heavier than necessary for 12 volts.
