o/t temperature gage on 1988 toyota

daughter sait the needle on the temperature gage did not move. Does anyone know if this is an electric unit? If so how do I check to see it it is working?

It could be a gauge issue, sending unit, wiring or just that the engine isn't heating up to operating temperature. It needs to be determined if the engine is reaching operating temperature first.

I was going to put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to see if the thermostat was working. but do not know much about toyota's and did not know if the gage was direct like on old ford tractors or was electric

As I stated you need to determine whether the engine reaches operating temperature first. After 10-15 minutes of drive time the upper hose needs to be too hot to the touch for most people. Avoid the cardboard as a fix, but it may help on the diagnostic side although I wouldn't suggest it. Hope this helps. Gerard

If the upper hose does not get hot replace the thermostat. The job of the thermostat is to establish minimum operating temp. I should have stated this earlier. Sorry.
