Thoughts on buying a 2005 GMC 2500??

Got my eye on a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 ext cab 4x4, the truck has a 100,000 miles. They're asking $13k. Mechanically it is reported to be sound, it's never had a plow on it, pictures make the truck look real pretty, good looking interior, I believe it has new(er) tires. Carfax reports it was in an accident in 2009, details say it was minor damage on front end, salesman says it was a fender bender??

I know mileage doesn't mean too much, thought I'd get some input from anyone who's offering. I realize you take a risk everytime you buy used, but who has the money to buy new?

Thanks for any input

I have a '05 GMC 2500, a/t, 6.0 gas motor, 131,000 miles on it. I really like the way it drives and handles. Have not had any major trouble with it. Lots of power. Only thing is............fuel mileage. 12, maybe.

Pretty high for an old truck like that.I know of a 2000 model powerstroke for 15000,just turned 100000.

My 2004 with the 6.0 has been great - other than replacing the automatic transmission at 93k. It came with a brake controller and tow setup and I bought it used at 45k, so I knew going in it may have seen occasional weekend boat towing or everyday heavy towing. Evidently it wasn"t the light weekend towing... needle bearing disintegrated on the main drive and sent little bearings through the transmission.
Overall, truck rides good for a 2500, averages 13 to 14 mpg (I have the 373 rear end, not the 411 or 410) and is just old enough to not have some of the new protect-me-from-myself idiot features.
Interesting thing - my carfax had roughly the same accident report. Have never found evidence of it and it hasn"t affected anything on it.

Good Luck

Tony

Look for rust around the fenders and the bed sides. The GMs and Dodges around here are rusting apart in 6 to 7 years.

Dad bought a 2002 2500HD Chev that had been a salvage vehicle, was rebuilt by a body shop owner who used it as his personal and plow truck a couple years before he sold it. 6.0 auto 4x4 what a truck! Mileage with no towing is not great; 12.5-14mpg (but about the same as my Ranger so who can complain! LOL) IT tows like crazy, is very comfy to drive, and at aboout 100,000 has had no major issues (knock on wood), it always, and i mean always has one or the other front marker light out; no matter how many sockets or bulbs you replace, and the factory discs (esp the rears) tend to warp quickly when towing as they were pretty light, once replaced with after market vented and slotted rotors that are about half again as thick with alot more surface area and accompanying calipers they are bulletproof! Rockers are gonna have to be redone soon; rust issues starting. But the answer is yes I"d get one if I were in the market...darn good truck. I have a buddy with the prettiest 2004 2500HD Dodge Hemi that looks a lil sexier but he has completely replaced the front end componets twice now to the tune of about $1100 once and $1700 the other time!

6.0 litres are PIGS on gas!!!! Unless you really need a 3/4 ton or a lot of power, I'd look at other trucks. They really are hard on gas.

I have a 2005 crew can with the dura max motor that I love although they are more expensive to maintain and probably would not have if I didnt pull anything. It gets around 18 mpg everyday driving and about 16 pulling(if I keep it under 2k rpm. The blue book for the truck with the info you gave in good condition to a private party is 12,500 and 10,500 trade in.

They're good pickups. I drive that same model - 2006 standard cab. I think I get about 14 mpg on the highway but don't really check mileage much. If you need a 3/4 you need a 3/4 and mileage is not the determining factor. This is my second one. Had an 01 before this and put 150K mi on it. Only problem I ever had was a seal on the transfer case was leaking. This one has about 94K on it and no problems yet.
I can't say about the price except like tractors they're too high when you buy one and too low when you sell one.

The price sounds about right in my area. My 07 3/4 ton with a 6.0 has been a good truck. If you really don't need a 3/4 ton I would look more at a 1/2 ton though. My gas milage really sucks but I need something to pull heavy loads and if you do to it should be a good truck to do so. I know of people who have well over 200,000 with no engine problems. I have 35,000 on mine with no problems yet. I don't use it though unjless I'm pulling or hauling with it. I could'nt justify buying a durmax and have no regrets not doing so. Yes, I do know they pull more easier and get alot better miliage. They cost more to buy and operate and you need to drive them alot more than I do to get your moneys worth out of them.

You left out the Ford's. They too are rusting to pieces ! Here in Ohio been trying to find a decent Ranger and sure looks like the tailgates and door bottoms must rust right off the assembly line ?

I think all the MFG's are skimping on rust preventive measures to cut costs. But the retail prices keep climbing.

From what I see in the dealer ads and in private sales, you would not buy it any cheaper in MN. Trucks are very high priced here.

Don't put much faith in carfax. At least that was a reported incedent and was likely repaired under insurance and not just patched up. You may be able to track down where it was fixed and they may still have pictures of the damage on file. Daughter put my car in a ditch. Barely looked damaged and drove fine ,but around $3,500 in repairs ! I have a copy of the pictures on CD to show anyone in the future when I sell it.

Looked at a Ranger the other day. Clean carfax 2 owners. The left front fender was replaced as was the door. Whoever did it even left the vin tag from the other truck on the door ! so it was pretty clear it was replaced. It was fixed and never turned in. No record of repairs. I looked no farther as I then wondered what else was covered up ? or tampered with.

Look under the truck, put it up on a lift.My sons 2006 lost an engine at 133k ,antifreeze in one cylinder. There are reports of poor head castings. Have a look at the truck forums.I have seen used trucks selling for more money than new.I looked at some used trucks last summer, decided to fix up the one I had.

If it mostly for a daily driver there are better choices than a 6.0 litre and a Prius will get you from point A to point B. The original post didn't specify which engine but the 6.0 is the standard engine. Gas mileage should be a concern with the price of gas nowadays.

I own a 2004 K2500 silverado witch is the same truck. 6 LT auto 4X4 with a 373 rear. Not HD. Get 17 MPH on the road 14 around town. and 13 MPG pulling 6,000 lb camper . in WV Hills. running 60 MPH. Truck has 76,000 on it and have never had any trouble with it. If you don't drive like you are driving in a NASCAR race you will do fine with it.
