Well, it grew on it's own, it's harvestable from spring to fall, and tastes very good. A cross in tast between Broccoli, and peas. I cut several budded floweretts, out in the adjacent hay field, and we treated them just like broccoli. Very tender and tasty. We will feeeze some also and see what happens. Looking forward now to trying some of the pods when they start developing. For more info. just google "cooking milkweed". Lots of info.
We have a early 1800's roadhouse/ now seasonal Adirondack eatery,in the aream that specializes in such local and seasonal delights. Been a while since I had Milkweed there, but they served it only in the spring as an asparagus type dish. This was better yet!
I'm liking it when I can harvest a weed rather than pulling it. LOL

Just a tip!!!!!!!!! When you cook it after it has been frozen. If you steam it cook it frozen do not let it thaw out & then cook it as it will get kind of mushy. Just take it out of the freezer & throw it in the steamer & don't over do it. You will love it. Gerald

Never heard of such thing, after crops were planted I would pull out by hand as many of those plants as I could, small field, but eradicated it, before those seed pods emerge. So thats 2 weeds I've learned that are edible from reading here, the other one is that low to the ground, radish colored stalk, spreads wide instead of growing high, milkweed being palatable, and not poisonous, wow !

the fluff is a good fire starter, but it burns really fast. be careful if you try it because of the speed it burns. friend showed me this and I have used it in my backpack as a fire starter since.

So is my neighbor who ownes it. He turned 92 back in June. He is a WWII army vet and lives there alone. When he came home from the war, he opened up a welding and machine shop in that barn. There is still a line shaft in the far end of it that ran his drill press, lath, milling machine and a power hacksaw. 10 years back I built him a 24X32'woodworking shop up back. I am now building him a ramp for him to manuver his Hoveround up and into the shop. He is an avid clockmaker and also makes a lot of fine fitting pics. like puzzles, with different species of wood. He has been a huge part of my upbringing.
