Pat,

I set a live trap out yesterday a little before noon to try to catch a groundhog that has been around my house. I left the farm and went to my part-time job. I got home at 7:00 PM yesterday and the groundhog was in the trap, but he was dead. I have no idea what killed him.

My wife told me that my son's dog was barking at the trap during the afternoon. I don't know if the hog died from fright, heat prostration, broke his neck trying to get out of the trap, or what.

First time I've ever trapped a dead animal.

Likey combination heat and dehydration.

Set live traps for raccoons works best at sundown.

Skunks live caught, I put then to work for me on pasture and hayfield ant hills. I place the trap on the hill in the morning turn skunk loose the same evening. They are good workers if better understood. Also do well removing grubs from lawns. Grubs gone, so are the moles.

I accidentally left the door to to the gravel-floored utility (junk) room a couple nights ago. Coons got in and tore up a bunch of my eggs. Bought a live trap and set it in the up in the utility room with a couple soft-shelled eggs and PB.

I got a baby coon two nights ago and TWO coons this morning.

Ever catch two coons in one live trap?

Have had 6 in the live traps that ended up getting lead poisioning. Traps are still set and baited, but they left that alone and the last couple of nights have raised hell on my sweet corn. Going to set out the "other" bait and see if I have anything dead laying out there in the morning.

I grew up in hop growing country and those growers did not want any harm done to skunks for the very reasons you give. They dug out grubs without doing damage to the root.

The wife had another one yesterday morning. I think that makes 7 in the last few weeks. She's using marshmallows and peanut butter for bait. Seems to be working.

My Game Warden told me coons can carry rabies and distimper. No law against shooting them. First time I'd used a 12 gauge in years. I got three and injured another (think he died) and my brother also got three.
We find they come out just at dusk and go directly to trash cans, dog food container and bird feeders. I sit in the house with lights off and shotgun in hand. We put their food sources in metal cans with lids and removed the bird feeders. Seem to be rid of coons at least for the time being.

Twice I have caught two coons in one trap, still have a pic on my phone from the second time cause I knew nobody would believe me. They weren't full grown but still a little tight in the trap. chris
