hi guys and gals question if i hook 12 V bat"s up so the pos is to pos and neg is to neg is that parallel-- and if i hook them so pos is to neg and the neg and pos leads go to the tractor is that series or the other way around also if i have one hooked pos to neg etc. can i go ftom the one battery pos and neg and still have 12 V or will it show 24V thanks having a long discussion and no one knows for sure== any ideas apprec.

If you go from + to + and - to - that is hooked in parallel. This will give you the same voltage but double the capacity.
You could use this to run a motor like a boat trawling motor to get a longer run time.

Hooking from + to - and - to + is hooked in series. This will double the voltage but provide the same capacity.
You would use this setup for 24 volts system while using 2 twelve volt batteries.

To answer your question, going from + to - on the same battery will give you 12V. This is if you are using 12V batteries.

Attaching - to - will not give 24 volts.
In photo the cable(parts key # 27)has negative clamp and cable(parts key #28)has positive clamp.

I may have stated it wrong but I did not say hooking - to - would give 24 volts.

I said Hooking from + to - AND - to + is hooked in series.
Where I most likely should have said.......
Hooking + to - AND then hooking your truck/tractor other draw to the - on one battery and the + on the other battery will give you 24 volts.

Is that what you really meant to say?

(quoted from post at 14:25:01 08/08/12) Wiring a two cylinder electric start diesel or 1960-1968 Deere diesel?

b&d
What diff would the year model make(2 cyl. vs 4/6 cyl)?? Both had batteries attached the exact same way when utilizing two 12V batteries.

What is all the smoke and mirrors about the 4 & 6 cylinders?
If this guy starts connecting the wrong point to chassis on
a two cylinder electric start diesel or a 1960-1968 diesel. It
isn't going to work. He isn't going to know any better not to
either.

What's different between a 2 cyl and late 60's model diesel 24V wiring in your opinion??? NONE in my opinion. NO smoke & mirrors on my part as you're thinking about yourself.

(quoted from post at 07:47:21 08/09/12) Making a clear distinction of where the 12/24 was used .

I see no "clear distinction"(different ways) in how the batteries would be attached to a 2 cyl diesel vs a JD '60-'68 diesel. Could you please explain the differences??

The "clear distinction" here is that those are the two types of tractors that use that kind of electrical system.

A "2 cylinder electric start Deere diesel" is NOT a "'60-'68 Deere diesel."

You can't refer to both types of tractors with a single term.

I'm pretty sure you two don't like each other but jeez, you are really reaching to find a reason to go at it... Are you REALLY that bored?

thanks john that is what i needed i thought this was the situation but wanted to make sure i don"t understand the answers about a 2 cyl JD mine is a 4 cyl diesel neufield 460 thanks

Actually Glen & I don't hate each other at least I don't hate buickanddeere. I just don't always agree with his information. I've stated in the past I strive for information to be CORRECT.

Now for my explanation:
2 cyl JD diesel ES came from factory with four 6 volt batteries with the electrical system isolated from frame EXCEPT for a wire going from battery to ground to frame to split the 24volt system in 1/2 for operation of lights and accessorizes

4/6 cylinder JD diesel is the same EXCEPT for utilizing two 12 volt batteries instead of four 6 volt batteries.

If a person decides to alter either of the tractors in question to 12 volt system it requires virtually the same procedure.

Please explain your view on the differences between the above mentioned tractors electrical systems.

If my explanation is INCORRECT please feel free to correct me & I will apologize to you and the other members of this forum.
