Shower valve

Our shower doesn't completely shutoff when the diverter on the tub spout is pushed down. Is the shower valve the blame? Do I just need a new cartridge to fix the problem? I need a shower after working on TRACTORS..

you need to replace the tub spout. the flapper
in the spout wears or gets a lime coat and will
leak. had to replace a lot of them in our motel
because the leaked.

it depends on what brand and things as to what you need, but yes the valve is to blame. a cartridge should fix it if its a single lever, some washerless you can buy just the kits for. if its a washer type you could need a seat also.

i think i misunderstood,if your tub and shower is running at the same time, then yes a new tub spout could fix it.

YES the diverter is the problem. Some diverters are a handled between the hot and cold valves that is turned--that's not sealing the tub spout when turned to shower.
Some are gate type valve in the spout--again not sealing and needs to be replaced.
Which ever you have it a pain. Handle you'll have go in from the back side or bust through the tile.
The gate type (pull handle in the spout) screw off the spount and replace then recaulk.

I understand that the shower works fine but when you wish to fill the tub, water still comes out of the shower head. It appears there is an obstruction in the piping to the tub spout, or it the tub spout itself. Unscrew the tub spout and check for corrosion in the spout or the pipe it attaches to. You may be able to clean it. If not replace it.

Pour some CLR or a similar product in a zip lock bag and put the bag over the spout trying to submerge as much of the spout as you can in the liquid and leave it for an hour or so. That MAY solve your problem and if it does, you don't have to risk trying to get the tub spout unscrewed....which more times than not ends up breaking the nipple or if it's copper breaking the MIP adapter off the tubing.
As others already told you, the problem is the tub spout with built in diverter.
