Canada folks???

Other than just pretty country, what are the attractions of the area??? May be buying a stallion near Calgary. If so, SWMBO will go there and fly back to Germany with it. Hate for her to waste an opportunity to travel a little tho. Looking at the google map, it shows what looks like a nice loop with Canada 1 west to 5 north to 16 east to Edmonton and 2 south to Calgary. Is that a safe area for a woman alone to travel and is there enough to keep her attention along the way? Not worried about fancy hotels or shopping, just nice country where she can take about a gazillion pictures and see something other than Germany and stuff on this side of the pond. I was 3 years at Ft Lewis, WA and constantly kick myself for not going up to Vancouver and seeing some of BC.... Like for her to be able to get around and enjoy some nice stuff.... Don't wanna send her somewhere and get her mugged or knocked off tho.....

Yup pretty nice area, Calgary folks are real friendly especially for city folk but like all cities you need to be careful.Sooner be in Calgary than Edmonton though.

The whole area is really nice too bad she doesn,t know someone who could take her around to places, (maybe the horse people could) .The Eastern slopes of the Rockies have nice tourists places, Canmore, Baniff,Lake Louise, West Edmonton Mall are all places to go and things to see.

South there in Wateron National Park, over Drumhiller way are the dino fossles and Badlands.

Hard to tell you where it is best but up through where your saying has alot of nice places.

All in all in is a pretty safe area but still a woman traveling alone and the cities has to be careful, but she would be as safe here as anywhere.

I live 3 hours south of the city of Calgary, but we are like a suburb here as they come here to camp in the summer and Ski in the winter, so we have alot of them around, lol.

My wife is into horses and i complain about the money she spends on the i feel kinda lucky now after reading that your wife in flying in from Germany, haha. We may know the people she is coming to see, horse world is a small world.

Anyway as it gets closer to when she is coming and if you have anymore questions feeel free to ask. A guy by the name of Drill is on here as well and knows the area better than me maybe he,ll pop up.

Horse is in Irricana about 40 miles NE of Calgary (??) ... The RT flight is included in the horse transport because she will help handle all horses on the flight. Not really into details yet tho. Horse has to have some genetic tests first... If he passes all, we'll be getting him. We are throwing out inquiries for transport quotes right now to get him moved to Texas, but thinkin the extra cost of shipping out of Calgary will be less than the Texas trip... We have friends and family in Texas and she likes going there....
Still open right now....

There's plenty nice places in Alberta,..sorry to say Calgary ain't one of them,.. from a distance it looks like a bad rock slide with the dust(smog) still hanging above it  I Got a daughter living there
Further west in the hills it gets nice though,as is Waterton park and writhing on stone south and southwest.and as mentioned drumheller with the dino museum(a must see)

BTW, what's so special with the Canadian horse??
Go to Holland and go see a Frisian horse," the Cadillac" among horses IMO
Your wife may change her mind

(quoted from post at 13:49:35 08/09/12) Dave,

I'm not sure about this but I think that Lyle Niemi is in Alberta. You
might try to contact him on Tractor Tales, too.

Tom in TN

Bison is there somewhere, maybe Lyle will chime in up here.... He can't spell when he's downstairs......... Seems like he is in Alberta tho....

Make it an extended trip into Ontario and fill a
spot in our moose hunt group starting Sept 10th.
We have two bull tags.

Looking for THE horse... Just happened to be up there. Not crazy about the horses over here for our breeding stock. We bought a stallion just this of the border from Holland. Kept him over winter, bred a few mares, and sold him. Just didn't click. Can't beat the 4 mares we imported from the states tho....
Where is Northern Alberta??? Lookin on google maps, there ain't nuttin up there.....

No place is safe for a woman with Lyle on the loose...
Lyle is about ...geez? 6? 8 hours? north of Calgary, Bison must be 2 days in an airplane north of there... don't horses have to stay in quarentine? Or are those days done? There is too much nice stuff to see ya can't do it all in a couple days, if she has a car, a day trip to Lake Loise is classic, or if she got a few grand to spare, there is a week long 1st class train around the rockies.... shouldn't cost more than a horse or 2.

You probably know more about it than i do but can get tricky taking horses across the international border. Lyle and Bison are way north of Calgary probably 8 or 10 hours, but i see bison knows about that brown haze, lol. course that,s only when it ain,t windy, and it,s usually windy in southern Alberta, lol. Good luck and if i can be of any help just ask.Sorry about the spelling but i had a head injury about a year ago at work and recovery has been slow.

I live in Alberta, but I'm north of Calgary, closer to Edmonton. If you are going to move a horse to Europe get in touch with the people at this web site.http://www.curlys.ca/. They are just down the road from me and I know they send some of their horses to Europe. As for site seeing or touring the Calgary area has some of the best in Canada. You can go an hour west and be in Banff. If you have any other concerns just ask, I'll tell you what I can. As to safety concerns Alberta is about as safe as any where in the world, Nobody shooting at you, no disgruntled postal workers.

I give up... I thought you were the most conservatie individual on this board, using all those old tractor and stuff ,, now you are airing a horse from Canada.. You have really been pulling one on this old country boy.. Wish I could help you get the animal from Canada to Texas, we truck west all time but all heavy equipment, Have never hauled a horse.. Good luck with your project. O I always read all your post, you really make this board interesting.

Hi Toolman, just wondering if you are the same Toolman that used to be in conversation with Willie N a couple of yeara ago. Have not seen any posting from Mark, was curious about Mark's health issue, Mark alway's has good topic's for discussion. Previous conversation's you were orginally from Springhill, N.S. Thanks, Murray

Just for starters
Couple people shot and killed in Calgary restaurant 14 days ago
4 cops shot to dead at mayerthorphe couple years ago!(cops are tupid anyway)
3 people shot and killed along the highway at a little one horse town 2 hr south of Galgary lst yr.
3 security guards shot and killed by co-worker in the university in Edmonton couple weeks ago(got a daughter working there.

So,..don't worry,...nothing bad ever happens in Alberta

You'll be in my yard

Hey Murray,

Didn't Willy live somewhere in the Northwest US? Maybe Washington state? Didn't he build some kind of very nice cabin out in the sticks and then sell it?

Maybe not. Maybe I'm thinking about the wrong guy (but I don't think so).

The.. percentage? per capita? of gun ownership is higher in Canda than the US. Handguns are under a national- stricker guideline than 'most' states, they are kinda suppose to stay on your property except for this or that etc... but like a bad dog, sometimes they wander off and get in trouble... again... just like Lyle in breeding season...

She could check out Spruce Meadows just on the outskirts of Calgary towards Banff. It's the premier show jumping set up in Western Canada. Ian Miller, Eric Lamaze from Canada compete there quite often. Teams come from US, Britain, Germany quite often also. Try looking at sprucemeadows dot com for schedules. I think there's a pretty big show coming in September

(quoted from post at 18:23:58 08/09/12) I thought personal firearms were outlawed in Canada? Where did they get the guns? Law didn't work very well did it!
ifles are legal here,.al one needs is a firearm aquisition license and you can buy as many rifles as you like, but for the automatics and hand guns a special permit is needed.
That gun law you refered too was just a waste of taxpayers money,..most people ignored it anyway

Thanks! Had that idea a few years ago but..... Importing a horse ain't cheap with buying, transporting to the quarantine station, 30 days quarantine, air travel, transport to the house, and customs fees on this end..... But that's just a dent in what those show freaks pay. So we was told when we inquired... And, those people are usually snooty enough that they wouldn't want a measely Quarter Horse mixed in with their high class stuff

Hey Sid how,s it going, we had a ton of rain all spring and june, then warmed up , breaking bailers trying to bail it around here now, lmao. Yup murray got a tea 2085 ferguson, a 50 massey a 44 massey and a couple of lawn tractors. Willy lives about400 miles southwest of me, don,t hear from him much anymore, ya he was having health problems too.

You gotta spend money to make money........ One of these days, we might see the "make money" piece of that phrase

Just so hard to find that EXACT horse here and it be affordable... Horses here just don't seem to be as clear in the head as what we've imported also... A lot, I believe, has to do with how they were born/raised. Our 3 best mares (pretty much bombproof) were "ruffin it" in Missouri with no special attention just fed good and watched a little.....

Hi Tom ,yes you are correct with the information on Willie N. Mark did have a fire tender vehicle that was rented/leased to the Fire Forest Protection Services and was alway's busy during the dry weather season and alway's lots of energy for other projects when time was available. Mark was posting at one time of some health issues. There has not been any posting from Mark for a long period ot time. Mark alway's got quite involved in some of the topics post. Cheers, Murray

I'm glad you guys found each other and can rekindle an old love. But would you have the common courtesy to switch to email or start another thread rather than hijack someone else's for your private conversation please???

(quoted from post at 04:33:47 08/10/12) I dont leave home much but I have been down to COW TOWN a few times, seems like a nice city

You should try and get out in the public a little more... get ya a little culture and learn ta warsh coffee cups

Ya need to make you a plumbing/sucker blower setup like the planer on the sawmill and have em both go into a silo or some kinda dry area...

Then,
your next project can be a wood pellet press... Let me know how it works out for ya...

What QH bloodlines are you looking for? There's a QH breeding farm near me that is going out of business and they may have something you're wife would like.

Foundation lines.. Blackburn, Poco Bueno, maybe some King..
Looking for a calm, smart, willing horse in bulldog format and black or grullo... After that starting point, the rest just has to click.... Any chance you have a website for that place or a link to what they are advertising?
Preferred quarantine station is in Houston... Just a liiiiittle far from Calgary... But we just haven't found THE horse except the one up there....

www.winridgefarm.com/ but they may not have the bloodlines/color you're looking for. Have you tried putting an ad on Craigslist in the DFW area? There are a lot of cutting bred enthusiasts that live around this area. I know the older bloodlines are getting harder to locate.

Can you open that website??? Says not available for me... Maybe it'll work from home...

Those old horses just aren't as fine and pretty for the show folks so they are slowly fading away it seems.... They are there, but usually the folks that have them aren't big on internet advertising and some won't even answer a request from a foriegn country...

(quoted from post at 06:16:36 08/10/12) Be careful now Dave2,

People might get the mistaken idea that you are lacking in people empathy. These threads are such fun to participate in.

I know..... Just hard enough to keep these folks' attention as it is... let alone tryin to deal with hijackers...... Just ain't good manners yaknow.....

Think I got enough answers that I can narrow down and use direct email tho....

Other than approx 17 cities where most Canadians live,
most within 2hrs of the US border. There isn't much for roads
and population in Canada. Ocean coasts on three sides.
Boreal forest with abandoned logging roads, Canadian
shield(rock) and tundra.
You don't have to travel very far north of the US to have
just a logging/mining road, winter only roads, rail lines and
float planes.
Most rural roads north of the cities are just to access
summer cottages.
Trans Canada highway, trans Canada railway and roads
between cities. Then some branch roads through farming ,
logging and mining areas. Can drive for hours without seeing
another vehicle.
Unpopulated and empty compared to Europe.
Even when compared to the US. More land area and 1/10 the
population.

It's hard for someone east of the Mississippi to picture that and especially someone from over here.... Think I'll try and talk her outta the big loop and into some local sightseeing with the folks she'll be visiting/buying from... If the Canada horse is the one we take...

If you take a look at the criminals committing crimes. We
would have very little crime if did not ruin the native population
by paying them a free ride on the reservations. And the city
made of lost boys from single welfare mothers fighting over
turf to supply drugs to "respectable " working people.

(quoted from post at 20:37:15 08/09/12) Hey,
any of you in Alberta near Calgary?

Dave2: A long way from Canada; but Take a look at this link>

http://www.pitzerranch.net/ranchStuds.html

Some of Old “Two Eyed Jacks” get were great performance horses, gentle to handle but usually had a little buck in their system under saddle for the first few times.

Hey, the closer to Houston, TX she finds her horse the better. But, it's entirely up to her... I give my opinion and help her deal with folks once she finds something, but the yes or no is on her.. Ain't nuttin comin back to bite me

I have her looking in Missouri pretty hard. Wehave 4 mares from there and I wouldn't trade my "MO Mares" for anything in the world.... Seems like the laid back attitude of the folks carry over to the horses....

Dave 2:

How much red tape to cut, and how many hoops to jump through regarding the shipping of frozen semen?

Do you have a couple of brood mares that you may want to phase out in time?
Any merit to using a couple of your brood mares for AI, in an attempt to get a Stud colt to raise for the future?.

I have been told you have the maximum of about a weeks’ time frame on shipping the frozen semen.

Just thinking out loud again.

The thought is there.. But we are small and want to stay small and are attached to our mares like most folks are attached to their kids. Keeping something from one of them would either mean getting rid of her or an outside breeding (which we aren't crazy about)...
We try to keep everything as natural as possible also.. She brings up the AI now and then and I always manage to change the subject...
