Just curious as to the availability and price of straw in different areas.. Is it more or less than hay? Straw in general, but barley and oat straw in particular.... Around this area, wheat straw is usually free for the taking (baling), a lot of free barley straw also, but some folks charge 30-50 bucks a ton behind the combine (same with oats).

Just curious.......

In Minnesota, I've seen square bales of oat straw for sale in the $2.00 to $3.50 a bale range. Large rounds about $30 each.

$5 a square bale for wheat straw here!ive seen it as high as $8. I dont know wheather gardeners are buying it for mulch,or horse folks for bedding.

All in all, about the same. Good quality alfalfa is more of course, but grass hay suitable for most livestock can be purchased for the same prices as straw.

In 2009 the farmer I worked with was selling clean oat straw round bales, @ 700+ lbs. ea, (thought they were the same weight as the hay if I remember correctly)$180/ton, to a large dairy north of here, hay was $150/ton. They used the straw as roughage in their feed mix, same with the hay, we delivered both. The small squares of clean oat straw were $4 in the field, good size, nice bales through a NH 315 baler, but they could retail at a feed store or farm store as high as $8-$10, if you need straw in any amount best to get with a farmer about it off season to get the best price.

I had a really nice photo in my old phone, (got washed in laundry though-dried it immediately after getting dunked no go) of one of our fields, nice rounded hill with a flat area on top, with windrows of straw after the 6620 JD combine, 4440 JD and NH 315 baling, awesome crop that year, guy came and took all of it from the fields aside from the 200 + rounds we did.

Can"t speak to oat or barley here, but wheat straw and grass hay go for about the same price here in SC Penna.

Some of the local classifieds here have ads for straw ranging from $25.00 to $60.00 per bale (big rounds),... brome grass ads are ranging from $85.00 to $130.00 per big round bale.

Some sold today, twine tied small bales, 60 or so went about 2 bucks a bale.

Grass hay tends to be just over that.

Alfalfa hay tends to be 3 bucks a bale, but depends on quality, can be less than 2 bucks or top over 4 bucks even, but need to be a long cold winter to get those crazy prices 'here'.

I buy straw every week from a local farmer. I pay 2.50 per bale. It's winter wheat straw. I use it for bedding for my goats and chickens. They have a self serve setup, just put the money in a box.

Feedlot over in the next county pays $60 a ton on the ground behind the combine. Their crew bales it up. Last I heard they needed 1000 bales. They run 605M Vermeers with net wrap. Their bales are usually 1800 lbs.
