I have a chance of purchasing a John Deere 1010 that has a plate over PTO will I have to replace transmission housing to put in a PTO shaft?

Using the word "chance" and "1010" in the same sentence is rather accurate.
Unless it"s a post 31,001 gasser , in supurb condition and selling for under a grand.......run, run away.

I'd think twice about that tractor. Here in tobacco country, there are lots of small tractors around from the 60's and most are still in use. There are plenty of Farmalls, Fords, MF's, and a few AC's. Some folks, including my grandfather bought 1010 JD's but they have a horrible reputation. My grandfather said he only kept the one he had one year. We still have the 35 and 135 MF's he bought along then and use them daily. My grandfather on the other side still uses the 1962 140 Farmall he bought new. I've never heard a good word about the 1010's. You will see one once in a while, but not being used like the other brands still are.

Reliability and expenses on that model of JD are epic. Do not go there unless you have secret powers over metallic self destruction. Jim

The JD 1010 and 2010 where John Deeres problem tractors and are very expensive to work on. I would look around a bit more and stay away from that one. Poor design and hard to work on and the parts if you can find them cost a lot. I did a bunch of work on one this spring and just the parts to take care of a PTO problem and steering seals and such where well over $750. If you do buy it depending on where you are I have a 1010 parts tractor and the PTO is still on it

Well the other posters have covered the problems with the JD 1010/2010 in a general way. Here are the big problems with the exact tractor you are looking at.

1) It must have been an industrial as it does not have any PTO. They are not rare either so don't get your hopes up about it being a high priced collector tractor.

2) To install a PTO on one without a PTO is a major under taking for several reasons. A) They offered several different PTO configurations on the JD 1010. Often in the same model year. I swear they used every left over part they had from the last twenty years on these things. So even having a complete parts tractor may not be all you would need as the models changed over the years. I had a JD 1010 for a while. It had the dual speed PTO but the control lever was out by the fender. I have never seen another one like it. Most of them have the control lever right next to the clutch pedal against the transmission case. B) This tractor would not have the clutch or pressure plate needed to drive the PTO gears. C) You would need all of the internal shafts and gears to drive the PTO. They where not just a simple long shaft like a Ford or Ferguson tractor. The PTO shaft could be in as many as three pieces depending on your transmission.

I would not buy it and plan on installing a complete PTO even with having worked on JD tractor for over forty years.

call your local scrap iron dealer and ask them what its worth...then offer half that amount to cover time and fuel haulin it.
